Very cool. These planes were not what not what the boys in the heavy bombers wanted to see buzzing around while they invaded the Fatherland. Keep the updates coming.

  2. Totally dig those WWII airplanes (WWI too). Doesn't matter who made them. Amazing innovative thinking, and big engines. Can't really go wrong there. The Corsair is awesome, where did they find the bits to that?

Love to see more pics, us Right coasters are more than a days drive from you! :D

A (non inverted) Allison V12 with a P-38 style prop shaft extension. They had to make super heavy (around 800lb!) engine bearers to restore the centre of gravity with the much lighter motor. Anyway, it´ll make V12 noises and shouldn´t be too shabby in terms of performance.

    Picture...

too bad they had to add the weight to make it balance. I'm sure it had more to do with the armor the dora had built into the cowling than it did with the weight of the engine. the v1710 is only 400lb lighter than the jumo.

regardless, the hp of the supercharged allison and the jumo are similar.

400 kilograms lighter! The allison looks positively lost in the engine bay.

I found weights of between 700 and 900kg (1500-2000lbs) for the jumo.

the allison is listed at 1345-1445lbs

I found my info on the site of the people who built the plane. Maybe it does include weight for armour plate and it certainly includes the weight of a pair of fuck off great big machine guns! :)

betcha it includes the weight of the cooling system too which is why that thing had a big ass cowling! the jumo even looked lost under that sheet metal. some of the jumo's even had TWO of those guns mounted to em. (obviously not through the crank)

here's a shot of a jumo in a cowling. (not a fw-190 though) notice how long the exhaust stacks are compared to the allisons. still TONS of room under there.

I cant wait to see a few of these in the air together what a sight! I am glad you guys are enjoying the pics I love sharing this stuff with people!

Our corsair was a complete and intact airplane when we got it. It was last flown in the 70's, it was one of the flyers used in the filming of the tv series baa baa black sheep until the engine failed and then it was parked. We just started the restoration on it a little over a year ago.

Is that the Corsair that had the "stair" and back seat in it?

No this one was pretty much untouched since its military days. I know which one you are talking about, I am not sure where that is now.

Took some pics of our P-51D Mustang today. We are in the middle of doing the annual inspection on her this week.

Is the Merlin in the Mustang still a 60 series with a two stage supercharger?

It's about damned time ... now I can't wait to see a mock dogfight with one of our birds in the near future. One of the meanest looking planes of the time for sure. Definitely keep us posted!

It's a V-1650-9A a stronger more dependable ngineover the earlier models. The P-51D originally had -7's

That 190 is a project I'm going to have to keep in mind this weekend when walking the dog.

I know that there is a Corsair at the Olympia, Wa. airport that has the "stair" and back seat in it.

36Tbird,you dad gets a cigar for shooting up a 190,they didn't call em Butcher Birds for nothing.I heard WW2 airmen say those FW 190 were heavily armor plated and the 50 cal bullets would almost bounce right off!
