    I believe in SCHOOL...

You get out of it what you put into it... simple as that.

Mom would ask dad what do you want for supper...

My dad used to tell my mom who was college educated for Home Ec. that You're the one that went to college for it you figure it out.

She made twice as much as him... and has twice as much now.

He also told me NOT to go to school.... that it was a waste of time.

    IGNORANCE

Ed Roth suggested that I not go to school. But If I hadnt gone... I would'nt be making the same choices... not just about art, but about LIFE.

Its about becoming informed and makeing decisions from that information... be it something from economics or a benifit from speach thats made you a good speaker.

I could go on and on... but the fact is the only people I hear say college is bunk... is from people who havent gone.

Stay in school and do your time... keep working for what you want and sooner or later you'll get it.

My dreams are finally coming true and they didnt happen over night.

    It takes WORK.

I agree with Tuck, school does not suck....I'm doing things, working with materials, etc... that I never would have or never could have done if I hadn't came here..... My teachers, most of which work in the field as we speak (not artists that couldn't make it or whatever was mentioned by someone earlier), have taught me a lot in this half of a semester. I have to have in intership, I will make contacts etc, etc.....putting me that much ahead of the average joe that is a good drawer but never went to school for it....I have to put out several works of art every week.....have studio classes for 5 hours straight and as soon as I get done, I go home and put in several more hours on a project....my lazy ass would have never done this if I wasn't here....and it is just plain forcing me to get better...

and once again I never said I was giving up, dropping out of school, saying I suck or whatever else was mentioned, I just had a basic question about how style is developed and if I was doing everything correctly to develop my own style....I know I won't have my own style until I graduate or maybe even further into the future......

I went to school for 7 years. I have a master's degree in fine art (sculpture).

And yes, school sucks. It is a business. Businesses care about money first and everything else second.....

A school DOES open doors though. That is a fact....
Be wary of what your teachers have to say is the point I was trying to make. They may not have your best interest in mind....

Own style ? no such thing, there is nothing now that was not done before ? its just done a different way ! think about it ! style is not copying what people have already done . that is not thinking for yourself unless you want to COPY but that is not style . choose your weapon, put it in the opposing usual hand, squent, put object on floor to paint, stand on head and go for it. thats style ! Big Daddy always pushed for individuals to think for themselves and expand their minds and think ahead . He used people to do his art the way he wanted it but that was for a purpose but he would always squeeze in there somewhere the thought to think for yourself.

    This is good stuff.

I'm not an artist. I'm an engineer, but here's my two cents.

At best, college teaches you to learn. Once you learn to learn you don't have to pay for it.

  8. This is exactly why I love this place.

I can't really add much of anything here, so much talent here with so much excellant advice. Kritz,Brush,JohnnyAce,all the others are now my gods. They are all so helpfull and willing to share.

I will say this: I instruct any future Pinstriper that asks such a question( sometimes I volunteer whether they like it or not [IMG] ) to emulate who ever style they like or who ever does the best work in their town. You may be burnt for being a copy kat, but if ya borrow whats best about X,Y or Z, your own style will emerge and all of sudden you'll be the newest, freshest, koolest striper on the scene. Until the next "New kid in town" comes along.

By then, you'll be established and thru hard work, honesty, fairness and good service, you'll be among the revered and making a good living.

p.s. At the Detroit Autorama, I got to meet two of my growing up heroes...Kenny Youngblood and Art Himsl. An awesome oppurtunity. I gushed like a little bitch all the way home to Chi-town. [IMG]

  9. I do not know of this art thing you speak of......But Ive seen it permanently attached to people who care to experience every possible contact with every influence they can get next to......in other words soak it all up- the stuff you like- the stuff you hate-key word there is"ALL".I think why most of us[me] typeswho aint artists are guilty of something akin to tunnel vision,we just dont take the chances that will allow us to become what we wish we were. [IMG]I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK, Bradberry.........

I like to think that everyone has their own personal style if they arent tracing.

My style changes to the types of music i listen to. If I need a dark morbid scene, I listen to death rock. If I need peaceful mountain scenery, I listen to John Denver, etc.

I think school is awesome as long as you are dedicated to why you're there. I got my Computer Arts and Design degree in Seattle and came out with Honors. But I melted myself into each class and each project, not taking one lightly.

If you party and only do the projects with 100% energy that you think are fun and the rest you let slide, then you're wasting your time.

Push the limits! Know the requirements of a project and have them in there, but get crazy with your imagination! Turn something in thats so off the wall or outstanding, that no one would of thought could of been done giving the resrictions of the assignment. Make it stand alone from everyone elses versions of the same project!

Being in college makes you competitive with your class mates, wanting to do better work than them and getting praise from your instructor in front of your peers makes you strive to be better and to try harder at pushing yourself and getting noticed.

Dont just draw the figure of the nude model in the limited time they pose, press yourself to see how much background objects you can fit in the drawing before the model moves. Or make an imaginary background, space scene, riding a motorcycle, whatever! Have fun while you push yourself.

If you go above and beyond, you'll feel much better about your time spent at school, and youll start to know what your capiblities and limitations are.

Once you find those things out, and realize what types of art you like to create (elaberate, bold line, realistic, cartoon, etc) then you may be on your way to your own style.

The quote on the top of my art table during college simply said: "If you're gonna go for it... GET AFTER IT!!"

My two cents. Good luck in college!! [IMG]

Picasso once said..."A good artist copies...a great artist steals!" I've had that quote over my desk for years now and still find it inspirational whenever I'm sitting here and unable to come up with an "original"...I agree with all said by others also...Hey!...Hi,C-9!remember daWolf???I'm baaaacccckkkk!Boy, there's sure a lot of "new" people here that I don't know. For those unfamiliar with me, I was a familiar character around here about 3 years ago or so. I've been an artist/pinstriper/airhead for over 30 years and have enhanced vehicles all over this land...Hi,Ya'll!!!

I couldn't have said it better. What Monster said.

In other words, drawing or illustration is the "language" of art, it's the language we use to communicate ideas. But it's the QUALITY/ORIGINALITY of the idea that can set you apart from the others.

Many years ago I was asked an interesting question at my first industrial design job interview. The question was: "I see you you can draw Mike, but can you DESIGN anything?" [IMG]

And probably one of the most important things is do it with a passion. Out of all the stripers I know here in Australia I think I am the most passionate about striping and I believe this is really showing in my work these days.
Oh and on the school thing, I never went to art school or anything like that, but it also teachs you disapline and builds your character all essentials in what you are wanting to achieve in life as an 'artist'.

I think with experiance comes style. Try this simple trick, take a tablet of tracing paper, go about 10 pages in and srible down something familiar. Take the next page and overlay it on to your last, pick out the lines that really grab ya, and lay those ones down good and continue to refine the whole piece until your at the 10th page or until your satisfied. This little exersise will help devolope style...And on another note, I am my worst critic, so a lot of times, I am not completly satisfied with every piece of work I turn out, but it keeps me going! If I was satisfied with every piece I don't know what I would do [IMG].... Just Keep on Keepin On....

Quit now........ while you still have time to learn something else and be able to make a good living to support a family.....keep the art as a hobby..... blow off steam with it..... do the art because you Have to do it because it's who you are, not because you Have to do it to put food on the table.........Don't study anybody else's work..... do what is in your own head.......it is impossible to look at someone else's work and not keep a tiny bit of it in the back of your brain somewhere.... it will eventually reappear as an idea you thought was original........we are already ruined..... save yourself.........

I like what monster said. Im really throwing my self into my school. I have noticed that many, many students do just what they have to in order to get the assignment done. WTF? Why even bother!!! Why just do the basic required? I am trying things and styles of photography that I HAVE NEVER DONE BEFORE........thats not to say they have never been done......it's just never been done by me. I want try it all and learn about it all.

I am in the dark room every spare moment I can find. Im doing more than just the assignments, Im trying new shit......and finding out what did and didn't work. I think that is the way you develop your own style. Trial and error again and again and again.

    I said no such thing.

a good artist buys, but a great artist doesn't pay retail. that's what I said.

and by the way, Dennis is right: once you start doing art for money, kiss the hobby/avocational aspect of it goodbye. now it's a job.

hey, I don't make the rules.
