Besides, I drive a modified 94 Grand Cherokee (and yes I do actually use it as a Jeep should - hard). And the gas mileage I get with it isn't all that worse than the newer import model cars. It maybe hard to believe, but true, I figured the gas mileage. On average I get 2-3 mpg worse. Its not a bad trade off if you consider i can drive the f'er anywhere. Getting rid of the CAT is the first step to better gas mileage. But while the government is stuck on enforcing unfounded chemistry, I guess CAT's will stay in place.

My 2003 4wd Suburban (that I enherited...no way I'm buying one) gets better gas mileage than any hot-rod/custom I've ever owned. It's also safer and more comfortable for my family.

...and I'd say the same thing to the person that tells me I shouldn't drive it as I'd say to the person that tells me I can't build any more hot rods...

    FUCK YOU!!! [IMG]

Just for another throw in. My mom's suburban gets 17mpg cruising at 80 mph with a full load of 8 people and all their backpacking gear. I happen to think SUV's are very useful. Just think of them as the big station wagon that you mom drove you around in when you were a kid.

that's great! [IMG] I am having a much better day today. I knew guys would come in with stories of how great their trucks do on gas....
That's not my point at all. As a whole, our girlfriends and wives dont need to drive ten ton army surplus cars around. They just dont.
I am a general contractor, I need a truck. My dentist doesnt. End of story.

Now lets talk more about my 32! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

And I guess my point is; "Who are you to decide what anybody else needs?"

...Guy ran a red light and hit my wife head on with my daughter in the car. I'm sure glad she was in the Suburban rather than the Saturn Wagon.

I actually take the train and public transportation in to work, but that's my choice too. You do what you think is best for you and yours. I think it's way outa line to judge anybody for that decision. Especially from an elitist posture with little or no knowledge of the other persons situation.

It's not very different than judging someone on the color of their skin... You don't know my wife but you think she's a selfish***** (I'm paraphrasing here) for driving a "fucking SUV."

...and there are many different brands of gas-sipping mini-trucks that lots contractors drive. But who am I to tell you what to drive... [IMG]

Oh yeah... And if you really look at the history of the decisions OPEC has made and the relationship it has with the US, I think you'll come to the realization that it doesn't matter what Americans drive with relation to the cost of gas. OPEC just wants a higher profit margin. They want to produce less oil (thus cutting their costs) and charge more money per gallon. If we all went to Hybrids I bet gas prices would go through the roof (like $10 a gallon) because that's how OPEC controls the market.

  7. racist connection?... nice touch.

back to my 32, did I mention it is pictured in the Birth of Hot Rodding? Last page, check it out.

    I guess I am an elitist. I drive a 1990 Chevy 6. 30mpg.

Goddamn, Gooch. You're just wrong on this. The racism connection was over the top I agree, but the rest was right on. I'm laughing my**** off over here with you deciding what everyone's wives and girlfriends need when they're getting your milk at the store. I just picture you hunched over big bowl of dry Fruity Pebbles, staring at the clock and mumbling to yourself about SUV's, hot rod VW's and expensive Deuce parts. "California" is seeping into your*****ing head, man. You'd pass legislation on this***** if you held public office wouldn't you. [IMG]

I think what we need here are some PICTURES of your car as it sits right now. Maybe a little run down about what you have found out about it and some details of how you're going to build it mostly as it was. (that was your plan, right?)

To summarize: You're wrong, now show us the car again.

    Yeah I saw that picture...

It definately is a cool little car. Any word on what happened to the drive-train? It would probably be pretty easy to reproduce.

My friend has a signed picture of James Dean driving the Little******** around the Goleta Airfield road course way back when.

I'm not trying to be a*****, and I didn't throw the "racist" thing in there lightly or just for effect. I honestly don't see much of a difference and find it funny that the same people who are having coronaries cause people are driving something different than they drive, would launch a full scale protest against somebody being descriminated against due to a percieved difference in race.

I don't understand why it matters what anybody else drives. Now if they drive like an****hole, that's a whole different thing... [IMG]

Well, my Riv gets about 12 mpg, and my truck gets about the same if not worse.

So I won't be throwing any stones from my glass house on this subject. [IMG]

SUV's are as a category much less safe to drive than any other car including sub-compacts. . . more likely to kill the DRIVER of the SUV. do a little research.

If you give a***** about your wife or girlfriend don't let her get one.

And besides that they are just lame and boring

I predict abandoned SUV's all over the place in five years just like disco van's in the eightites. They used to connote power and sportiness. . . now they just say "I'm a clueless suburbanite". Love fashions or hate them . . .they do change.

The only reason they have lasted this long as a trend is that the profit for selling a $14K truck for $40k can buy a lot of advertising and "encouragement" from the car companies.

OT might be, but I rather drive a BIG car with a V8 than a microcar with 1200cc diesel. And yes, my daily drive is a SUV, a 93 Grand Cherokee the Chrysler 318 under the hood.
Drive it 600 km today, did not use more gas than the neighbours Volvo. 1,1 / 10 km (gas cost over $100). And since I love the sound of a V8 I will drive one until the last day I can drive, even if the gas always has been twice as expensive here as in the USA and the socialists in charge of this country roams the streets in their SAABs and Volvos...

Well, for one thing, SUVs and large cars in general really aren't necessarily safer than small cars. They're definitely safer than that old Fiat posted above, but modern cars have a ridiculous amount of engineering going into safety (hell, sometimes too much). I remember seeing a crash-test video on TV of a Dodge Durango, and people THINK it's safer because it's so big with so much interior room, but that's really not the case. In a 35mph head-on collision (I think that was it) the dashboard crumpled down and almost severed the crash dummy's legs. When I got in an accident last fall, in an early 90's Chevy 3/4 ton truck, it was a single rollover (not even, it just rolled over on its side and ended up on the roof) at about 35-45mph. That's a VERY likely kind of accident for a big truck. Luckily my only real injury was a broken collarbone from the seatbelt (which kept me from shooting through the windshield and getting crushed by the truck), but the roof collapsed so much that I could barely breathe. If I hadn't been lifted out of there quickly I probably would've suffocated. That's not something that'll happen in a small car, even if it rolls over many times (it won't happen in a 40's-50's car or truck either, though, since the body's so massive). Plus, in a small car, you're more likely to be pushed out of the way of a vehicle that hits you, which means less impact strength and less of the car intruding into the passenger compartment.

As for gas mileage, what pisses me off more than anything is that it's still so bad for ALL gasoline-powered vehicles. When you think about it 25mpg is pretty*****ing bad. Cars back in the 20's and 30's got 25mpg without stuff like overhead valves or fuel injection or anything.

  15. ok, its friday. beer talk only.

actually I needed an excuse to post that cool Avalanche picture. I feel much better today! I am a total jackass. [IMG]
