I am building a gokart that requires an automatic tranny with reverse. I have found atv motors with reverse, but I am not sure I want to go this route. Does any one know anything about CONSTANT VELOCITY TRANSMISSIONS? Who makes them? I have seen them used in tons of stuff but no one ever lists a manufacturer. thanks
the CV drive in my go kart is just a belt with variable width pulleys, one with "centrifugal" control, the other is spring loaded to take up the slack. No reverse available with this design, unless you add it to some other part of the drive train.
I don't know what exactly your wanting to build, but you might look at pirating a 3/4/5 speed tranny from a lawn mower. They'll have reverse that you desire. Check around on some of the racing mower sites and they might even have tips on changing the bushings out to high speed bearings to make the things live a little longer. The CVT systems basically allow your motor to give you great low end gear ratio and then wind up with high end speed. Another way to do you reverse thing would be like a motorcycle or some Locost cars, where they use a starter or small electric motor to do reverse duties. Again, not knowing what you are building here (racing kart, fun kart, mobility cart?) it's hard to pin down an idea, but this should get you started. Have fun!
The Comet Torque-a-verter is the one most people use. http://www.mfgsupply.com/GoMiniClutchTorq.html/mv_session_id=tqk27RNt Its just a snowmobile tranny. Get a forward reverse gearbox from a riding lawn mower. I remembered seeing one in one of my catalogs, but cant find it now.
It is basicly going to be a neighborhood (low speed) vehicle. So a 10hp motor with a capabilty of 25-35 mph. Just something to mess around with, but I would like to not have to rig to much stuff up, which is why i am hoping to find out who makes CVT's . thanks
10 hp is a pretty good size, vertical shafts out of mowers are dime-a-dozen practically . . . . horizontal stuff gets gobbled up for karts/bikes/etc...., that's why an old mower solution might be good. My dad had a kart back in the day (60's) that had a two speed rear end from some old Chevy (36 or 39??).
Why dont you just buy a used gas powered golf kart, I just sold one w/lift kit and mudder tires for $1200 they should be very plentiful in FLA they sell for 800-2500 around here
Many modern snowmobiles use a reverse equipped CVT assembly that should be adaptable easily to a solid axle. The hard part might be adapting the drive clutch to the 10 horse engine. Maybe you could adapt the full snowmobile drive and engine to your cart. I have a single cylinder Skidoo powered Odyssey for the kids...but used the original Honda driven unit as the Skidoo engine clutch used the exact same belt! Lucked out big time... No reverse with this early Odyssey though...and you DO need it on tight trails. BTW...deep water crossing is a no no for an exposed belt CVT. Slippage will kill the belt instantly.
i have actually been thinking about buying a rear end and motor from a golf cart and making it work, what kind of tranny's do those things use?
They use a comet type belt drive clutch w cvt and a differential w/reverse we used the hell out of ours at the dirt tracks for a few years mine was a Yamaha 250 cc Im just saying it might be cheaper in the long run just getting a golf kart instead of trying to adapt all this stuff up in a home built chassis and in fla they should be easily available
I used an older lawn mower tranny in my bumpercar . 4 speeds plus reverse. The newer ones are hydrostatic. Tulsa Engine Warehouse sells em.

Looks like these guys might have it too http://www.atsgokarts.com/specials.shtml . More ideas: http://www.vikingracing.net/andre/tech/polaris.php
