I seldom get in the water now that all my "Personal Time" is taken up working on my car(s)- and I live walking distance to the beach. I also own too many boards- I never set out to collect any surfboards, but one that came my way should buy me some nice parts: I have a 1980 Frye Eagle I'm gonna sell soon.
Interesting. I have an old lightning bolt that I have kept over the years, can you tell me anything about them. Sorry if this is too o/t.
A long time ago when I lived in california I had a 9'4" Hap Jacobs, one of the reissues not an original, it had a sweet spoon nose , you could hang out there all day, I loved it, havent surfed since 1998.
I have a 9'-6" Robert August Mark Martinson model- signed by Mr August and Wingnut. I also have a Hotline 80s style 6' thruster I never rode. And my first board- a 7'-6" Clubber made in Daytona Beach. It's funny you posted this- I was actually going to start a thread requesting pics and info for surfboard racks on hotrods and customs.
Surf all the time. Actually just went to check it. I ride a 6'0 twin fin fish. 70's style board. Have a longboard but the fish is too much fun.
THATS BITCHIN!! id love to have them sign my movie poster -as for racks most soft rack systems should work,i have a dakine tail gate rack for my 53 truck,my buddies uses a soft rack set up on has a sedan
Just started back surfing a few months ago, after a 20 year hiatus. I picked up a used 9'0" Williams Bro's made in sebastian. Im doing pretty good with it, in fact Ive been to the doctors once for x-rays, had a few good cuts, a huge bruise on my ass from the skeg, and oh yea got the shit stung out of me last sunday by man o war. Good Times..... Mike
I have about 20 boards in my collections, 5 of which I ride regularly, 3 of them are kustoms shaped for me by Bob Pierson (ARROW Surfboards S.C.), rest are vintage. Ridin Since I was ten and Ive never gotten rid of a board, never will
My short board is a 10'1" knockoff of my old 10' Hobie (David Nuuiwa template) and my long board (the San O' Bomber) is 11'2"; classic foam (dense), Volan glass, old school shape and heavy as hell.. "Just like the 50s, bro...[tm]" Both custom made by my friend Craig Hill of Portly Longboards. One fin. One god. One country. C St. Ventura. Not me surfing. Me shooting.. Driving around with a board on your roof purely for effect does not make you cool. It makes you look like a Kook.
I'm so jealous of you guys that get to surf all the time. I spent a summer in Hawaii and learned to surf then. Needless to say, trying to surf on the east coast after that just sucks. Lucky!
i hear ya bro! the lightining bolts & rustys are from age 8-17,i wouldnt sell my boards for any thing....maybe the american griffiti duce coupe!
I have a short board, a 6 footer. I don't know why really. It keeps the stoke alive I guess here in the midwest for the times I am able to get out to a coast and get wet.
Don't consider myself a surfer really, cause I don't surf in the winter. But when I do get out, I ride the same board I grew up on, was my Dads. Now it resides with me even though my pops takes her out once in awhile. It's a 60's UFO stubby, made by RICK. I love this board. ....and Charlie don't SURF!!!
I've been surfing off and on for years. But I don't hang on to my boards much. Currently, I've got a 6'3" Channel Islands Sashimi Fish and a 6'7" Surf Prescriptions HVP (High Volume Performance) Fish. I picked up both when I worked and surfed in Carlsbad a lot. Now I back here with the little waves, but I can't pull myself away from the shorter boards. I'm a big dude and I should probably get a 9 footer. I had a crazy year this past year and, despite living a couple blocks from the beach, didn't go out that much. I haven't been this winter at all. But that's going to change this year!
I get in the water pretty often, had great days last Sunday and Monday at C st in Ventura. 5 mins from my house. Rincon is about 15 mins away. I have a brand new board made by a friend. It is 9'8" and copied from a 1966 Tom Hale that I have ridden for years. The new one is a triple stringer with Volan cloth, tail block, giant single fin, nice and heavy. I'm a low performance surfer all the way! My garage rafters are lined with old longboards. Most are in bad shape but not all, some I used to ride. I have...Greg Noll, Dewey Weber, Yater, Gorden & Smith, Olympic, Ole, Harbour, Wardy, South Coast , Tom Hale and a few others. I have a 58 Mercury Surf Wagon but it,'s currently off the road for some bodywork ...when I find the time. Someone should print up some H.A.M.B. Surf Club decals.
my favorite spot in the ventura area was a few mins north off the state beaches exit, down the frontage road there was a nice little point. Great longboard waves, and on the right day you could get a good long ride.
Sorry to hijack (and I am a newbe so be gentle), but I never got warm fuzzies from surfboards. Probably because I am sitting in Colorado with a s*&^load of snow on my driveway and it is too cold to get down to the garage and work on the Buick. However, we do rack the snowboards on the roof from time to time, but I will admit that they are not on the type of vehicle that would be appropriate to discuss on this site! Dreaming now... a nice old wagon (not dropped as it would not make it through the snow) with a nice rack. Loaded with a 183 Neidecker GS, a Rentiger 178, maybe an old Rossi 175? race board with a top sheet that was reminicent of the Buick bombsight, a nice Hot Blast, maybe a vintage Aggression Assault, and top the whole thing off with a bright orange Skwal. Mountain speedsters of various vintages, none of this wet water hardware! I think the whole point of this is that I am occasionally jealous of all you folks out in the warm weather (or even with warm garages), but I really don't think I would change anything!
I've narrowed my board collection down to two over the years. My cadillac is a 9'0" that is about 23" at the waist with a triple string core that was shaped for me by Scott Miller in Mill Valley ca. about 1996 (it has lots of repairs but I love the board). My other board was my Dad's, it was from "Sea People Surfboards" out of bolinas ca. about 1970-ish. It's 7'6", narrrow, with really sharp rails, kind of a make the drop and turn out kinda board. My Dad lived in sausaulito ca. at the time, so he had is shaped primarily to ride at ocean beach and Fort Cronkhite, I'll take it out now and again to Cronkhite which is a great get in and get out fast steep break, but I'm a little out of shape to go play at ocean beach.
I surfed Ventura and Santa Barbara in the early 60's thru the mid 70's--had an old Hobie--not sure what size--and a 9'6 Dewey Weber that was heavy as hell! We used to haul them to the beach on crappy hand-built trailers behind our bikes---that's how I started building cars! My surf car was a 58 Chevy Yeoman wagon---later I had a 53 chevy wagon.I work with KiwiKev---he still surfs----but he's still a kid. But I still check out the action a couple times a week---just in case!!!
