Trader, you might have known my uncle William if you served on the Salt Lake City; he was a Radarman there and on the Hornet. he was my inspiration for joining the Navy; of all my uncles that served in WW2 he was the quietest of all. his stories were chillers, though....
BTW you can blow smoke wherever you want.

  5. I posted this in Tugmaster's August 2008 "O/T NAVY HAMBers Time to muster!!" thread (click HERE) ... but since this August 2007 thread has new life, I'll do a little cut & paste ...

    My father was a photo-journalist aboard USS Lexington (CV-16) ... 1955-1957 ... and
the coupe's interior was done in 1957 by C.A. HALL Auto Tops of Oakland, CA while he
    was stationed at NAS Alameda:

My younger brother was a "brown-shoe" officer aboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) ... flying
C7F staff & other VIPs around in his "Sea Pig" in the late 80's & during Desert Storm:

    April 1990 - Indian Ocean.jpg

... later he was a Helicopter flight instructor at NAS Whiting Field in Milton, Florida ... and
he ended his Navy career as the Hangar Bay and Flight Deck officer aboard USS Bataan
    (LHD-5) ... during her pre-commissioning (1996-1997).
    ______________________________________________

Me ... I never served in any of our country's armed forces ... but I kinda feel like I'm in
the Navy ... since 1987, I have been working with US Navy Command &
    Control Systems.

As as Software, Systems, Fleet Support, & Product Deployment Engineer; I've had the
honor of traveling all over the world installing systems at US Navy sites (CONUS, Hawaii,
    Europe, Japan, & Bahrain) ... and on platforms (AGF's, BB's, CG's, CV's, CVN's, DDG's,
    LCC's, LHA's, LHD's, SSN's, & SSGN's) ... back in the late 80's, I even had the privilege
of performing installs & providing training aboard all four of our WWII vintage battleships
(now museums) ... USS Iowa (BB-61), USS New Jersey (BB-62), USS Missouri (BB-63), &
    USS Wisconsin (BB-64).

I've also had my fair share of ship rides ... including some on now decommissioned ships
    like USS New Jersey (BB-62):

    BB-62 Feb 88.jpg

    ... and USS America (CV-66):

    CV-66 May 89.jpg

Somehow, I've ridden ships on both sides of the equator, but still remain a WOG (never
crossed it) ... I've yet to experience a "Trap" on a carrier ... though I have a couple of
COD flight "Cats" to tell my grandkids about some day.

Well, that's enough about my "pseudo service" ... let me offer a sincere thank you to
all of you HAMBers that actually serve or served our country!

    enlisted December 1965
    boot camp at great lakes
early 1966 to early 1967 in Newport, Rhode Island
mid March thru April 1967 Coronado, Ca. Counter-Isurgency training for Vietnam
May 1967 to May 1968 in Chu Lai, Vietnam ( about 60 miles south of DaNang )
June 1968 thru October 1969 aboard USS Fulton AS11 sub tender in New London, Ct.

I had a pretty good time in the Navy, joined because my dad was in way back, he was on the first USS Enterprise. i still think it's a great experience and really makes you grow up.
