i need some advice. ive been spending money liks its growing on trees latley . cause well latley ive just had a bunch more then im used to but thats niether here nor there. any way i just got this 77 plymouth trail duster parts chaser thing. my first mopar. it was a good deal. i cant p*** up a good deal. but then friday this guy at work tells me he has a 71 plymouth fury III 4 door for sale for a good deal. so after work i go and check it out. turns out it was his first car he ever had. hes 29 now. preety well kept and all. just has some qtr panel rot from driving it daily for some years here in michigan. the guys a total mopar nut. he has like 6 of em! car has a 383/727 set up. runs great drives great. but its ugly as all sin! big green and ugley! so long story kinda short. i got talking with him and his good deal gets better. he said 500 bucks for this thing. and i can take it when i want. so do you guys think it wil be worth it. dont really need 5 cars right now but what the hell its a good deal right. i was thinking kinda a late 70's lowrider theme with it (i used to be really into lowriders some years ago) i think it would be a fun car just to mess around with. so i guess all im kinda asking for is some opnions on this. and if any of your have owned one of these. and are they good/bad or other? im kinda on the edge of going either way. so i just kinda need a nudge in the right direction. i know in the end its all up to me. but im kinda in the dark on the whole mopar world. damn goofy *** cars!! Thanks for your opnion

500 bucks is over priced for a running driving car? i know its mopar and all but any thing that runs and drives around here is kinda allways worth 500.

a rusty early 70's mopar should be FREE or close to it,especially if it's a friend.sounds to me like you're trying to talk yourself into this, don't let me stop you...

The 383 isn't worth too much, but the 727 trans is about the best/strongest auto trans ever built. That car will also have a Mopar 8 3/4 under it: All of them were 30 spline axles, and the pinion bearings are the same size as the Ford 9-inch famed "Daytona" pinion bearing. Look at the numbers on the diff case--if they end in 741 or there's an X stamped on the pinion area, don't bother with that dif. Otherwise, a stock 8 3/4 will handle more power than a stock 9-inch.
In '70, they offered a Sport Fury with a 440 6-Pack. I still don't know how to feel about that...

around northern nj $500 for a running car is cheap. i would buy it cut the roof off and cruise it for the summer then take the motor trans and rear out and crush it in the fall

I'd say that the whole is not worth the sum of it's parts.

I agree with earlier ***essments that the motor, ****** and rear are worth something. If you need them/want them for a project, then they are easily worth $500. Especially if you get to drive them first... If they're just gonna take up space in your garage until you get around to doing something with them, then I'd p***.

As for making something of the car itself, I agree with you: it's ugly. How much work do you really want to put into an ugly car? No matter what you do it will still be what it is: an ugly car.

And for making it a lowrider, I'd say there are alot of other cars that can be made into better looking lowriders than early 70's Plymouths. Besides, it's probably a unibody car, so you couldn't even get the 3 wheel motion going without ruining the car...

Look at it this way: It may be a great deal for someone who needs, or even wants the car, but it's $500 that could be put toward one of your other projects... Just think about what you could buy with $500 that would get your favorite project that much closer to completion, and then ask yourself if it's worth it.

thanks for your helo guys.. i knew all i needed was some sense talked into me. your right now matter what i do it will still be an ugly *** car. put the motor in my garage? whats a garage im renting a damn condo right now. i allreayd have two stove bolts cover by grabage bags on my back porch [IMG] i dont really need the car. i guess ill tell the guy to wait for some old retired cop to come along that wants to relive his "glory" days in the car!
and im not to big into mopar drive trains. i dont think i would waste my time taking the parts off it. cause i know i would never destroy a car by putting that goofy running gear in there. ill stick to my gm products.any one else want it???

I'm a Mopar guy, and I gotta ask this question: If you don't like Mopar drive trains, what is there to like about them??? The STYLING? Sure there were some good years in the mid to late 50's... But if you're not into Mopars for the drive trains and mechanical engineering, then what's the point. For the most part, there are better "looking" cars of every era.

I know you've said that you're not a Mopar guy. And only own the parts chaser you recently bought... But most people(Mopar guys or not) acknowledge that the Chrysler corporation always had strong, reliable drivetrains.(maybe not "always") And in some cases, LEGENDARY drive trains.

not saying you should want one for your car, just that a Mopar big block and 727 ****** deserve more credit that to be called "goofy"...

i dindt mean to shake things up. there onley "goofy" to me cause there not my norm. i know 318's and what not are damn near bullit proof drive trains. but as far as a trad style car goes. i dont think the "look" of them could do it justice. the "parts chaser" has a rebuild 727 and a 360 and the damn thing runs strong as hell and gets decent millage for being 4x4 all the time. just going from allworking on gm motors then going over and looking at some of the ways they did things over at mopar its just a little diffrent from what im used to seeing. kinda seems like they complicated things with lots of there motors as compared to a gm motor.

    I wasn't offended. They're just cars...

I was just saying that most people look at Mopars and see their drive trains as their most redeeming quality. To hear someone looking at an early 70's Fury and actually thinking about buying in spite of it's drive train, instead of FOR it's drive train was just strange to me...

I understand that the big blocks aren't considered "traditional" motors, but remember the 383 first came out back in the late 50's. They could have easily been used in a car back in the day.

    70s lowrider? hahaha.......no way.

my newly found wisdom when buying stuff says,

unless its unique, something you must have, or will be using with a current project... leave it be.

save the cash... otherwise youll be hawking junk on the HAMB when you hit rock bottom.
