    we called them "westpac widows," the place to be was Johnnies in Alameda the night of the day that a bird farm sailed, the place was packed ... so when the carrier sailors came back they found their westpac widows just like they left them, "freshly f...ed and crying"

  16. I was became a "shellback" somewhere near Singapore; but in June '68.

    Singapore was OK; but liberty with the crazy Aussie sailors from the Vendetta was great.

    in 1972, the USS HECTOR AR-7 was our way back to SASEBO, JAPAN and we had a five day open liberty in HONG KONG.

    well a bunch from the engineering department and a few others from other departments wound up in a bar near the pier where the british fleet were tied up.

    well everyone knows how fleet sailors are especially when they have been on the ship for an extended period of time.

    to make a long story short, when in a BRIT bar every drink is respectifully hoisted "TO THE QUEEN"............

    well to say the least one or some of our crew decided they had heard enough about her and the last thing that was before the shit hit the fan was; ................."F**K THE BITCH".................

    well i happened to be on watch in the forward engine room and word came down from the bridge to get ready to get underway.

    the provincial governer for the area sent a message to our captain that said;

    gather your crew and leave his port and never return.

    needless to say we were unhappy that they could not take a joke.

    in closing i heard that the bar was pretty busted up after it was emptied.

    To RichB's question, I got my blue nose certificate, still have it. First time we crossed the line, the skipper refused to acknowledge it as we were a missile submarine and everything was secret. Hell we knew in the engine room there was ice in the HPAC bay bilges. But as I made nine patrols on the 657, we again made a northern run and this time our skipper was a full captain who was a mustang. He started out as an enlisted ET on commissioning crew of the Natuilus. One of the finest guys I ever sailed with. Anyway he did up the blue nose ceremony with style! Best of all he picked on the junior officers way worse than the enlisted.
