...We were young, and a helluva long way from home. We were pulling
down crappy wages for twenty-four hours a day, seven days a-week
availability and loving the life we lived. We didn't know it at the time, but
our association with the men we served with forged us into the men we
became. And a lot of that association took place in bars where we shared
the stories accumulated in our, up to then, short lives.

While many of our classmates were attending college, we were getting an
education slicing through the blue rolling seas of WestPac,
experiencing the heart pounding drama of the return to the ship with the
gut wrenching arrestment to a pitching deck. The hours of tedium,
boring holes in the sea late at night, experiencing the periodic
discomfort of turbulence, marveling at the creation of St. Elmo's Fire,
and sometimes having our reverie interrupted with stark terror.

But when we came ashore on liberty, we could rub shoulders with some of
the finest men we would ever know, in bars our mothers would never have
approved of, in saloons and cabarets that would live in our memories
    forever.

  5. I was a bubble-head / submariner on the USS Henry L. Stimson, SSBN 655 Gold Crew, 1976 - '80. Groton Conn and Charleston, S.C. There was no ongoing war at the time, basically we cleaned and polished. Now I'm permanently claustrophobic.

I was on this one USS Enterprise- CVAN 65 now CVN 65, from 1967 to 1970. My prayers go out to the families of the 24 that died and the 85 that were wounded on January 14th 1969. I am just greatful to be above ground and sucking air.

As a civilian I have served at
NAS Point Point Mugu- with Grumman flight test on F14's 1974-1980
NAS Miramar- Grumman Top Gun Support 1978
Currently (L3) supporting C-9 Maintenance, Prime contract.

Well sailors I have read all your responses and I'm a little disappointed. I had hoped that the "Fantom Crapper" would finally step forward. If you ever served at sea, you know who I'm talking about. He was everywhere-on every ship in the Navy. This swabbie would dump his load in the craziest places and disappear-never to be caught. Brother had one on his ship as did every sailor I've discussed this with over the years following my tour of duty. Please come forward if you're out there and a hamber. You truly deserve some recognition. We were just talking this morning about standing a "Snow Watch" at Greatlakes Boot Camp. Thanks to all of you. Sam

USS Carl Vinson had a "shower shitter". Wasn't me.

I didn't do the Great Lakes snow watch but I was there. There were those signs in the head warning that crabs can jump six feet! I did Service Week in the bake shop making cinnamon rolls. Damn good cinnamon rolls!
