Be careful, buying a new car is very costly. When you drive it off the lot you will lose in depreciation alone, about 1/5th of the actual value or as much as 25% depending on the make and model. I always try to get a car that is 1-2 years old with low mileage and documented maintenance records. Get the extended warranty and squeeze them for free oil changes, tire rotation, and as low a deductible as possible (at least $250 minimum). This extended warranty should cover all parts and labor. Let them know that you aren't walking away from them with an expensive car but that you will be back and be firm because they are trained to intimidate you and make you feel cheap. Also, I am speaking in general terms, not all dealers or sales people are like that, and we just bought my wife a newer Chrysler 300M from a very nice and honest dealer who was totally fair and above board. He gave us the name and phone number of the previous owner and we were able to visit with her and talk about the car. This might seem like overkill to some but to us it is a major commitment for 5 years and we tried to cover our bases.

    Good luck with your purchase.....

  2. Be aware also that "invoice" is not what the dealer actually pays for the vehicle..there's also a hold-back amount (usually 1-3% of "invoice") given to the dealer on a quarterly/yearly basis by the factory for volume sales. So the actual price eventually is less than the "invoice " price they wave in front of you....also be aware of such things as "document fees" etc on the sales contract..they're just the same as asking you for more money...same scam as "snake oil" , VIN etching, paint protector, tape stripes,etc.etc. Dealers are entitled to make a profit, otherwise they couldn't stay in business....but, with the proper homework you can limit them to a fair amount...
