Wasn't it the only place on mainland aussie to get bombed by the evil empire in WW2 ??
I'm guessing if you like hot and dry it would be alright, they run a round of V8 supercars up there and some drag racing too from memory so its not devoid of motorsport.

  5. Not exactly dry. A mate flew the local natives around the islands for a few years and then moved into Darwin for his final stint before coming south again. Reckons it was hard to work on a car for more than 30 minutes 'cos you'd break out into a viscious sweat, due to the tropical kinda heat.

  6. Middle of absolutely ****ing nowhere!!! [IMG]

Everything already stated is true, although they don't really have normal seasons. Being tropical, it's Wet OR Dry. Not much in between.

One thing no one has mentioned though is that the Northern Territory doesn't have any open road speed limits, which is fine if you want to drive REALLY FAST to NOWHERE! LOL

One more thing... You'll never never know, if you never never go.

(You'll get the joke if you get there.) [IMG]

Go here to find out all about the Northern Territory.

Where's Choco when you need him. He used to live up there.

I have never been up to Darwin, but I have heard it is a pretty layed back place. A lot of people from all over Australia work up north on some of the big projects up there. Hey if you get to Darwin El C you can always fly to other parts of Aust when you have time off. A good hot rod and custom scene down south in Perth, that's where Bootal is originally from. I have family in Perth and know a lot of car guys there. A real lot happening over here on the east coast of Aust. There is nothing like seeing other parts of the world, Im sure you wouldn't regret it!

El C, that ROCK is about the same size of the U S. Never been that far north, but the east coast is the coolest place I've ever seen. Spent 3 months there a few years ago, been savin to go back ever since!.....OLDBEET

If you like beer and roads with no speed limits then it could be the place to be but it is ****ing hot and full of crocs, big ones that like eating tourists.....
The people of Darwin take beer very serious they even have what is called the Darwin Stubby. The biggest bottle of beer known to man.I don't think to much car stuff happens there.

    I won't be a tourist... [IMG]

Everything else is cake, I lived in Venezuela in the desert there. I'll bet it gets pretty breezy at night there. At least I will be able to speak-a-da-languich there. I don't know if they will pay to send a Yank all that way, but stranger things have happened. I talked to the wife about it last night and she was kool with it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so here goes nothing.

Well, I filled out my application and attached my resume’, I am eminently qualified as I had this type of job in Venezuela and mix in my current experience, I’m the man. Problem is, relocation $ is for within Oz itself. I’d negotiate the max incountry money I could get for that position and make up the balance. I would like very much to work and live in Oz, I enjoy these types of life experiences, adventurer that I am. Hopefully they won’t get scared away from a Septic coming over. [IMG]

I have been to Darwin and can't really add too much more that hasn't been said already except look at the map that Mai Ki Ki posted. See the solid white "roads"? Those are the only roads that you will be able to travel on to get to any other decent size town. Picture Darwin at the top-center of a U.S. map and Perth down near SoCal. You can not travel as the crow flys in Australia. To get from the top of North Dakota to SoCal you would have to travel along the whole northern boarder/western coastline. Same goes for Australia, to get from Darwin to Perth you have to either drive the coastline or straight south then west, no cutting across and driving southwest.

If you'll have the time to take drives such as these and see the all the natural beauty that Australia has to offer, I can't encourage you enough to go for it. It will be an adventure of a lifetime.

Between Darwin and Alice Springs there are some awesome National Parks but if your not into hiking and nature they won't be of much interest.

If you head alittle south from Darwin, then east to Townsville and north a bit to Cairns you will find the most beautiful beaches and islands in the whole world. The coast of Queensland is my most favorite area ever to visit. My words could never adequately describe the sites you would see. I spent 3 months traveling from Brisbane to Cairnes on my last vivist there and still didn't see everything and experience everything I wanted to.

Please, please, please, if you get the opportunity to go, jump on it. I wish you the best of luck. Darwin wouldn't be my first choice to live, but you'll be close enough, with alittle effort, to have an awesome time while your there. Australia is truely a beautiful country and the Australian people are the friendliest I've ever met anywhere in the world.

Make sure you get a place with a guest room for all your HAMB buds that might want to come visit! [IMG]

If I can have a good time in the Tri-Cities, I can have fun anywhere. I've always said, it is what you make of it.

They yanked the job off the net and are recl***ifying it. I have been invited to check it out and apply when they repost.

  15. Cool. I always wanted to go to Darwin. Now I've got somewhere to stay. [IMG]

Good Luck with the application El C. I'm sure it will be an experience of a lifetime.

Got to love a job that allows you to travel , live and enjoy.

Like alot of Aussies, never been, you can fly to NZ quicker than to Darwin ( from Melbourne ) anyway, you wont regret it.

People who have gone also refer to it as still having that 'frontier" sort of feel, and HAF ( hot as F&^K) just do a weather check its about 30 degrees C ( 85 F) everyday of the year, only the humidity seems to change! but unlike the desert it doesnt cool off overnight, so get a place with an airconditioner - a must.

And who could say no to roads with no speed limits!!! just watch out for wildlife and roadtrains.

My parents went a few years ago, and reckon its a pretty scarry experience to be sitting on 80-90 mph and have a truck with 7 trailers go zooming past you like your standing still.

yes its a different country up there...

  18. Never made it to Darwin, but the bits of Oz that I saw in 3 months were great. I'd go back in a heartbeat. When you're up at that part of Australia it's also the jumping-off point to Bali, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, all of which are absolutely awesome (of course there was nothing blowing up last time I was in Indonesia). Grab the br*** ring if you get the chance.

I actually just had a little more time to talk to the aussie I work with. A couple tips about Darwin.

It's a drinking soceity, they don't want any tea totallers there.

The city of Darwin is cool, nothing outside of it but wilderness.

There is a Bar there that is nothing more than an acre of concrete with a chain link fence around it. Once again they take their drinking seriously.

    There are old cars there.

There is a boat race from to Darwin to some island every year, rule number one, boat must be made of beer cans.

There are 30ft sea-going crocadiles. Inland ones mostly up to 10 ft.

    Tropical weather...

Once agin, drinking, they like it.

Well that's mostly what he had to say, thought I would p*** it on.

I don't think it's me, it's just the guy I work with, really wanted to stress that they take their drinking really seriously. He kept on coming back to it. So I'm thinking they might be.

I would definitely go anyplace in Australia. The people are the friendliest on the face of the earth. And their country is chuck full of new adventures for those of us that don't live there. We've been twice and are planning a return for the very near future. If possible, we are going to go to Darwin just to look around and to taste the local brew. Damn, Australia is just about the coolest place we have ever been. Now, if they could only get the government from screwing up lots of things with their insisting on "helping" with things they have no business interfering with. Oh oh, sounds just like the good old US of A!
