My Dad,93 yrs old WW vet ,lost two cousins that day. One of the many brothers killed. Never forget.God Bless America.
Thinks this thread would be better if we did more remembering and honoring of Pearl Harbor, and less talk about being staunchly anti-Muslim. Seriously? God Bless all the Armed Forces, past and present.
We all have family that served. My pop was a lowly truck driver in supply. He never spoke of the war to me. My wife's father was a B-25 mechanic on the Hornet for the Doolittle Raid. (Finally disproven!) He spent the war on airfields keeping planes maintained. He too was pretty silent after the war. Many celebrities also served. Many we didn't even think about.
a huge "thank you" for those who kept us free and and those continue to do so. This is a thread about remembering Pearl Harbor. Please give the veterans of World War II the respect they deserve by keeping all of your other opinions to yourself. Unless you served in World War II, this thread is not about you. Do not diminish the purity of the other thoughts expressed here by those who wish to remember and say "thank you".
There used to be a website detailing their efforts. I lost it. A few more... God bless every American that serves!
been there and seen the bullet holes in the barracks, thank you to all those that came before, for all you did. all gave some, some gave all.
I have my Pop's purple heart where I see it every day. WW2 vets , wives & mothers, truly the greatest generation, Today we do have heros made of the same stuff, all volunteers. Never forget Pearl Harbor and 9-11
Today I shed my tears for those who have served, for those who have bled and for those who have died..... May God Bless them all!!
President Roosevelt said this day will live in infamy he was right. We should never forget the past and the extraordinary sacrifices men and women from all around the world made for our freedom. I say a personal thank you to my father, may he rest in peace, for his service in the Navy during World War II, from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, and yes I think they were our greatest generation. Thanks, Dad
God Bless America and all of our current and former soldiers! This is not off topic at all. Our interests in hot rods were sprouted with the men returning from World War II and the great cars, planes, motorcycles, and boats they created.
My boss, who is 86 years old (and still works 50-70 hours a week), was a senior in High School that day. He served in the European theater and was a POW. I turned to him today as we were going over some drawings and said "Thank you for your service for this country". He was genuinely touched and said "You're welcome".
I had an uncle who was on one of these small boys, but I can't remember which one, either the Cassin or the Downes. He only lost a finger. As this was a well published photo, he'd always show it to us. Gary
Thank you for this thread. Far to many HAVE forgotten. It is refreshing to know there are still plenty of good Americans out there.
Today is the Day my Grandfather and 4 of his friends quit their Senior year of High School to join the Navy . He was 17 , He is the tall guy in the center along with my grandmother . I miss him Dearly , and I do appreciate ALL servicemen and women . My Father did 35 years in the Air Force starting in Vietnam 1968 . My Big Brother Retires tommorow after 22 years in the Army and went to the middle east in combat 4 times starting in 1994 . It almost killed me when I could'nt get in the USMC due to very bad hearing . I really wish I could have done MY part . Check these pics out , there is a couple pics of a Japanese Zero my Grandfather took the tags off and cut a piece off of it and labeled and dated it . It Says Zero - 159
X2! It's sad to look at our so called "News" websites & see virtually no mention of the fact that today is Pearl harbor day. MSN - 1 link to "20 pearl harbor facts" CNN - no mention FOX - 1 small article sandwiched between "Kim Kardashian" & "2010's Most reviled celebrities" sheesh THANK YOU VETS! We won't let 'em forget your sacrifices!
On the day after Pearl Harbor, monday December 8th, Dad lied about his age and joined the Army. That very afternoon he was sworn in and dispatched up the California coast. He was given a rifle was was told to protect the beach. Each soldier was given rations, one rifle and had to guard an entire mile of beach...! The was no game plan, so they were just doing whatever they could, just one day after the attack. Many people don't realize that the California coast north of Santa Barbara was shelled by the Japanese. I believe they also shelled the coast of Oregon....so the war was here. Dad went on to command a group of Sherman Tanks in the Pacific. At their headquarters in New Guinea they had this enemy skull at the main entrance to the tent area and the one office. He went on to the Philippines and the island of New Britain. He got pretty banged up, but made it through until the end in August of 1945. My Uncle Bob wasn't as lucky. He was killed in this Corsair when I was four weeks old in 1950 during the Korean War leaving behind a young wife and two sons who were toddlers. and it's also my wife's and my wedding anniversary, so the feelings on this day each year are certainly mixed.
Thanks for the story Mazooma ! I have a very old scrapbook my grandpa saved everything since the war and it is full of newspaper articles with his notes on where they were during the Marshall Islands , Palau and Mariam Islands . It is awesome and never knew about it till 6 months ago . My Grandpa NEVER said a word about the war and I feel like I missed all that history .
yes lets us that know better, lets never forget today ever. Thanks to those that severed our country for that tragic day and time in the world.
