I am definatly not trying to get a pat on the back, the only problem i have is with people not believing what i say i have or have done. It has nothing to do with people not giving me undeserved respect that i have not earned which is basically what you are accusing me of.

Let your work speak for itself, nothing worse that a ****y guy be he young or old. Be humble and polite and just do your thing, your about the age Zach Suhr was when I first met him, and he is humble and polite to a fault. His work speaks very loudly about his ability and I think I can say he is one of the most respected builders on here. A long Time ago my father pounded into my head, there are talkers and doeres, which do you want to be? someone who talks about how great you are or just do it and let them see. Enjoy it now when you get old and fat its a lot harder to get motivated. ummm or so I hear

it does not matter what trade or industry you are in because youre younger you are not taken seriously because you have little experiience this may or may not be true but its all the info most people need to judge you by thats life .surround yourself with rodders of a similar age and things will become fun and creative.i have trouble being taken seriously trying to fit a t04 turbo to an a model a banger or trying to hot up a 1929 pontiac motor and i am 43 cheers and remember have fun dave:)

Hey "kid"...I'm 50 and get that **** from the old-timers in my craft, STILL! Enjoy it, and like a few have already said, enjoy your youth. It's shorter than you think.

  5. Lots of us just like you, my son keeps telling me to finish the car, I am trying to but its getting harder and harder to do. Still like to be different, working on a 79 F100 now, I own it, so I am going to do my thing, my way. Think an old Quote reflects how I think, If YOU like it its RIGHT!!!! Stay Cool man!

  6. When I was your age these cars weren't "traditional" - they were current. But now, because of my age, some people on this website consider me just an old coot that's full of ****. If we were all perfect, then they wouldn't feel so special.
I respect everybody I meet. What happens to that respect depends entirely on them.
Just do what you do. If it makes you happy, then nuts to them.
    Remain calm.

Not trying to be rude but I would just keep your mouth closed. I mean, tell it to some one who cares, not these other ****s. You don't have to prove anyhting to anyone. You should be in this hobby for the love of it. I don't give a **** what anyone thinks about what I have done or the cars I have had. Even when I was your age, I felt the same. In time, if those people are still around you want have to say anything.

When I was a fairly young looking 45, a couple of the locals were looking over my '37 coupe. One of them made the statement, "Daddy must have a lot of money!" I took it as a complement although they didn't mean it to be one. My old daddy died when I was 10, and I had to learn to build things and pay for them on my own. The '37 was built at home, by me, and was paid for the day it was finished. The local with the mouth will never have a car like it; never in a million years.
Now that I'm 61, what really gets my goat is when I'm talking to a younger woman, say thirty something, they start talking about their dad. Disgusting!

My guess is that when you are old, you will never get the credibilty that you crave. The world will keep spinning and no one will notice you. Only you can give you the credibilty that you crave.

A lot of the posts here are starting to get to the point, so here it is:

(1)- You are what you do! Not what you say!.....not what you promise!......and not what you dream! It's what you DO!

(2)- ...and there is only one single way in the entire universe to get real "respect". You can't buy it, demand it, or think you are en***led to it. Remember....Ya gotta EARN it! Until you prove it, the more experienced guys will wait for the verdict.

Let me add one more thing...Just make sure the "guy in the mirror" meets your approval. If you aren't lying to yourself, about his respectability, then the world will eventually notice he has some integrity.

    Dont worry about it.
At 17 everyone thinks you don't have any experience.
At 65 (like me) everyone thinks you're too old and senile.
So at some time between 17 and 65 everything must have been just right. Damned if I remember it though. Age does have some advantage , you can say "I forgot or I dont remember" and nobody *****es at you.
    Keep up the good work!

There you go. That's how you get respect. Ask anyone here whose work is respected. I bet they got that way just like that.

The proof is in the puddin... is what I was told. I started my first tig welding job at the age of 17 with 40-50 year old "pros"....they all heckled me for being young and only getting the job cause of my father (welding teacher of 35 years, local legend really, ha).....well long story short, the heckling quit 23 minutes after I started.

My point is, when people say you cant, or say your not right, prove them wrong, thats the best response.

23 minutes? I could have told if you were a good welder 30 seconds into the first bead.
This is a thread that will never end.

Have you heard the new country song that goes....

"I don't care about what people think, don't worry about what they say....

    and

".....blah, blah, blah, just a jackin' their jaws, gonna let it roll offa my back..."

    Good advise.

Only you have the power to perpetuate worthless threads, because of your contribution to this one, you have in fact given the worthless some value. Think about it next time, nothing just pops up, YOU made this happen.

When is the ball dropping party?

Actually this thread is quite relevant! I noticed this group has constant conflict, over history, the way things are done and have been done, ridgid beliefs, and lack of respect for people who might have a different opinion, and sometimes part of the issue is a difference in age and outlook. Talking about things like respect and tolerance cannot be a bad thing.

HotRodPaint, You make some really great points - I especially like the part about lying to the guy in the mirror. This world DEFINITELY needs more mirrors.
