Hey guys, just wonder what your thoughts are on using a U-haul trailer to tow a 48 Plymouth about 300miles.Will it fit? do these trailers tow any good?.let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.I'll be towing it with a 96 diesel f250.

If you're talking about their lo-side wall dual axle car hauler trailers, it should fit in the trailer is at least 15 feet long in the bed.
I've hauled many an early car with 65 Ford 6cyl standard shift pickup for alot longer distance than 300 miles. Just load it right and tie it down right and you're there.
U-haul doesn't make anything that won't tow well, it IS their business.

I did a 50 chrysler about 200 mi. Dont tell them that is what you are hauling though or they wont let you pull it with your own truck!

the only thing i would look at is you may not be able to open the doors on the car once you have it on the trailer due to the wheel wells or fenders of the trailer..and that all depends on the type of trailer that store has and the ride height of the car you are putting on the trailer. check it out..you may have to pull a dukes of hazard stunt to get in and out of the car.

    I have NEVER rented a U-Haul trailer ... I have a open trailer :)
But 1 mistake I see a lot of folks do is pull the vehicle to be towed ... all the way to the front of the trailer and tie it down. :( I see a lot of swaying and dangerous stuff with cars improperly loaded on car trailers.

The rear of the tow vehicle should only drop about 1 inch ... ( at the ball ) ... as a general rule ... with the trailer loaded. I measure the distance of the ball ( trailer unloaded ) and then load the car. I then move the car forward and rearward until I get the 1 inch drop at the ball ...

This safely places the load on the axles of the trailer more evenly.

The 54 wagon on the trailer above LOOKS to be too far foward ... but with no engine and transmission, it is evenly placed weight wise over the dual axles ... with the ball down about 1 inch :)

With the F-250 ... you should easily pull the U-Haul ... just load it with the weight placed over the axles.

  8. used them many time before i bought my own trailer. a friend of mine worked at u-haul and we made many midnight runs with one. one thing i remember is if your load is right at the weight limit watch your speed, dancing trailers have zero entertainment value.

Just towed a Stude Pickup on a Uhaul Trailer with my Brother's Honda Pilot. worked fine. Make sure you get the low down on disabling the surge brake for backing up. We couldn't get it to shut off and had a hell of a time backing the trailer up the drive way to load the truck. It is a fairly simple deal but we were DUM and Dumber when it came to getting it. Trailer towed fine handled the load no problem. Plymouth wheelbase is 117.8 inches truck is 112 but there was room to spare.

Your post says you are from Upstate NY. Is that the downstate definition, or the upstate definition (north of Westchester) I,m in central NY and have a 46 Plymouth, nice to know if we are in the same neck of the woods.

  11. When I sold my '50 Ford Woodie, the guy came with a U-haul to get it. That car didn't even have 4 tires that would hold air, I chucked some rollers on it and then discovered one had a screwed up valve stem. We got it on there fine, it fit although it did overhang some in the back.
