I wouldnt post this here normally, But i know theres alot of old skaters on here, and Ryan said hisself that the occasional skate post is okay... I got a really cool looking skateboard at an estate sale yesterday but I cannot find any info on it. narrow deck, old style blue stain with "GT Starfire" in yellow on the bottom and really cool heavy metalflake blue and silver top (will post pics tonite) Does anyone remember these? any info if it was a good/rare board or a POS like a variflex... its in really good shape and would look good just hanging on a wall. if someone is interested, it might be for sale too, just not sure if its worth much...
it's a discount store board, not really collectable... and just fyi, Variflex was at one time a top quality company, up until about '84-85... then Gil Losi sold the company and it went down the tubes....
Since this post on vintage stakeboards got started.. (lets not let it go to waste) How about some of you lucky enough to own vintage Dog Town desk's from the 70's posting pics of the artwork. I can not find a real one and want to have a good stripper do a fake one for me to hang on my garage wall or strap to the roof of my wagon... thanks (other pics of vintage decks would be good to look at also..
My dad found this at the tip 20 years ago, my brother and myself used it until one of the wheel bearing collapsed, it now sits on one of my book cases.
last time i was home, i found my old gullwing equiped "jack the ripper" deck. i think it even had slimeball wheels, and some german ball bearings in it...jeez talk about bringing back memories of bad hair and tight jeans...eech
We usta use the remaining two good trucks off our steel wheel clamp on the leather sole shoes skates to make a plywood or 2 X 4 board. Then in the early 60's, the Cooley "Bun Buster" commercially made skateboard cameout. There may have been some before it, but not "commercially successful, like the "Bun Buster" was. The "rich girl" up the street got the first one and after she finally let me ride it I got one too. Of course, the first scratch on the original finish was all the reason I needed to strip it and paint it candy lime green with an iron cross decal on it. Anyone got a "Bun Buster" from the 60's?
for tons and tons of Dogtown boards, Wes Humpston stuff, and some cool Zorlac goodies check out www.skateboardpimp.com
Not that vintage, but worth mentioning.... Santa Cruz re-released some of their 80's stuff (OJ III wheels, Rob Roskopp, Jason Jesse, etc.) earlier this year. My business partner and good friend runs Switch Magazine and we were lucky enough to get some reviewer samples! HA HA! Looking for the link, I forgot I wrote this article almost 4 years ago. BTW, Rodney Mullen is still kicking ***. Take a look at some of his videos from THIS YEAR. He's the most technical skater I've ever seen.
Still my favorite skeat to skate is a SIMMS Hosoi! it was the Simms kamakasi but with Hosoi on it instead!! i WAS A NOS on sell on ebay for over 1500 damn
There are alot of the 80's boards being repoped now. You can get alot of the early 80's Powell Peralta boards right now also. I saw a kid the other night that was about 14 or 15 at the Skatepark wearing skintight pegleg jeans ,a sleevless tight shirt, old Vans hightops, a burr haircut, and riding a repopped Powel Peralta board. It was the biggest 1982 flashback I had ever seen. I guess its about time to bring the 80's back. Since I saw that Germ has posted back up on the board maybe we can take the patented "Just like the 50's bro" and get the Just Like the 80's Bro sloggan going. Thats exactly what I thought when I saw this kid. Just like the 80's Bro.
cars & skateboards.... whoa! never did I even expect to see the word skatboard here. My jaw kinda dropped a bit. here is a topic that hits home.... me the old car & the husband a pro skateboarder... http://www.jeff-ferris.com/ I will have to show him this post
SO I guess its not much to get excited about? Oh well, at least the metalflake is purdy, should take some pinstriping nicely...
heres another yard sale find. dont need to ask about this one, though. gullwing phoenix trucks and speedwheels bullets. some great "period" stickers and grip tape ya gotta love! cant remember of i gave 50 cents or a buck for this one...
mine are not to vintage, i did most of my skating in the late 80's (when i was older). the decks were too much $$$ for my broke *** so i started to buy the blank ones.......yes that's chevy orange. i found a duane peters board with rat bones wheels.......that thing was flat. i did some skating in the late 70's early 80's (real young kid) on homemade decks.....man i remember getting new wheels (Kryptonics) and that was like sliced bread. i have SANTA CRUZ BULLETS on my board now!......i'm to old and fat to skate now....last time i went skating we got chased outta a parking structure in newport beach (by john wayne airport) at 10 or 11pm, us bombing the lot and them in a golf cart......haha (circa 1991 or 90).
I have a little collection of kooky old skate boards, all kinds of stuff, wood decks, plastic decks, home made, steel wheels, clay wheels, urithane wheels, etc. Some of my favorites are my Roller Derby 20 (wood deck, steel wheels). My wood decked Variflex w/ clay wheels. My oak deck Makaha (the word "Hi" spelled with grip tape on top, space tape "Go For It" sticker on the bottom and urethane wheels). Then my rider, a laminated wood deck Maharaja (the water ski guys) with gull wing trucks and original Kryptonics wheels, this board is fast as hell.
Gang- I bought my first board by mail order (out of a hot rod magazine of some sort) back in '64 when I was in the Army, stationed in France. The brand was "Val-Surf" and it was made of laminated hardwood (not in layers like plywood, but side by side pieces about an inch wide and 3/4" thick. Short, narrow, and super-stiff - absolutely NO flex. Wheels and trucks were "Chicago" brand, with clay wheels (VERY hard) - taken directly from shoe skates. Seems like it cost about $15. Believe me, if you hit even a tiny piece of stuff (I'm talking something the size of a peanut - or smaller), the thing stopped dead in its tracks and your sorry *** went flying! A couple of us had them though, and that made us way cool at the time, so who cared about the possiblity of getting bones broken?. They were robably the only boards in the France back then - hell, maybe the only ones in Europe. Fun at 20 years old, but certain death at my age now! LOL
So one Sat. morning I stop by a estate sale and this is sittng in the garage. I grab it ask the woman running it "how much?" 5 dollars she says I offer 3 and she takes it. Weird plastic composite deck with clay wheels by Hobie from the 60's. The wheels spin like new! Kids, they actually used ball bearings back in the day and by the second day of riding the nut would loosen and the bearings would be all over the street. Anyone have a Logan earth ski with road rider #4's they wanna' get rid of? -stick
Does anybody have pics of any rob roskop, mark gonzoles, or lance mountain decks? they sure would bring back some memorys. I've been looking for a MarkGonzoles deck for a number of years. Miune got stolen back in the Late eightys That was a cool deck. **** all i have time for is an occasional mountain boarding session, Its just not the same as street skating, Don't you just love old age Gregg
here's three pics of my kid's board. It's a re-pop Jason Jesse deck. I got it in Santa Cruz at the surfshop last year. I think it's cool that they are re-issuing these old boards that I used to ride New when they came out in the 80's. brings back good memories of my skate rat days wearing a suicidal tendencies flip up bill cap, Gotcha shorts, vision street wear high tops and fingerless gloves....ROCKIN IT
They've repopped all three of them and you should be able to get them from your local skate shop.... or online...
.....for those that haven't been there..... http://www.weirdtrip.com/Skate/ .................for those that have....sorry!
Well here's mine from my childhood and yours truly mugging for the camera while my pool was being repaired. I was too chicken to actually give it a try but Lil Bud took advantage of it being empty.....
Vintage skateboards, you gotta love them. I'm a pack rat and don't get rid of anything. I still have all my skate stuff, Mad Rat shorts, Rector pads and a ***ortment of wheels and a few boards. Plus lots of posters, tshirts and who knows what else. Great topic--thanks.
