O/T What the hell is up with Broke MF'rs

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Shiftymutt, Jun 12, 2006.

  1. So I have some stuff for sale (shameless plug) and I get a message from some "new to rodding youngster" who wants me to hold one of the grill shells (another shameless plug) for 2 weeks until he can get paid....$30.00 buck and you want me to hold it...Are you kidding....AM I being a dick I told the guy he had until friday to "scrounge" $30.00 to buy the shell....

I have run into this lately. I just don't get it....I can see if it is a hundred buck but $30.00.....come on. I even told him I would bring it to the Roadster show so he saves on shipping.....WHO CAN'T COME UP WITH $30.00? how do you build a car with no money.....I have been tight and ran across something I wanted ....I found the money.....

I guess this is more of a rant.....

Is this just ahppening to me?

yeah im a broke mf'er but i can come up with $30! if you sell it on him i wouldnt feel bad if i were you. If this guy was a buddy of yours and you really wanted to help him out that would be a different story. you could be the ultra nice guy and hold it for him and he will probably love you for it, but really its up to you.

So what if he's 13 and runs a paper route and won't get paid until he collects from his customers and his folks won't help him out?

  5. see, when i put up little rinky dink stuff (like 100 and under) i make the disclaimer..

    no dibs or holds.
first guy thru with the cash gets it.
and then i make a little push for paypal...

it doesnt discriminate against the poor, rather it keeps my business in transit...

do you really NEEEEEED the stuff gone? can you be a nice guy about it? do you wanna be a nice guy about it??

personally i dont have time. i want stuff gone, so first come, first served.

  6. Not to hijack the thread, but how do you handle PayPal fees? Do you have the buyer add it to the total, or do you call it a wash?

Back to the thread, $30 ain't a total I'd hold on to it for.

I don't think that's unreasonable. You're not running a business, you're just trying to unload some stuff you dan't want, why should you have to wait?

I'd tell him, sorry, I can't hold it, I gotta get rid of this crap in my garage. But hit me up when you get the cash, and if I still have it, we'll make a deal. who kmnows what kind of money someone else would be willing to pay for it in the meantime...

How long have you been holding on to it? What's another 2 weeks?

  9. i can eat $3 per hundred to get something moved.

  10. I eat the paypal...I don't worry too much about that....I offered to hold it till the end of the week but he wants me to wait until the friday after that....I told him sorry...

i figure, im usually slow on shipping, since i mostly can only get to the PO on saturdays....so if a guy asks to hold it, as long as he doesnt expext it the next day as soon as he pays me its all good.

I did a small striped piece back in April for $35 and I'm still waiting on my $$$.

At least he didn't ask you to "tote the note" and let him pay you $3 a week.

If the dude was straight up with you and gave you a firm date (reasonable time of course), I could wait a week or so. If the dude is being dodgy about it, put it back up for sale.

I understand. Lately I've had a hard time prying dough out of people who win my epay crap. I don't do paypal, but there's no reason I should wait 3 weeks for a $25 money order. I'm starting a new rule, cash in my hand within 7 days of auction end. You can wait a day or two to get a money order and send it pony express and i'll still have it in less than 7 days. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

    $30.00 doesn't sound like much
    unless you don't have it.

my first hot rod started as a shell of a car the owner let me make payments on, $100.00 a month for four months

I bought another car like that, very small payments over several months.

that was truely all I could afford.
it's tough building on a shoestring.

if it wasn't for those two generous old guys I might not be into hot rods like I am.

if you want to unload the junk, give it away and put in a half hour overtime at work.

me, I would hold it for him.

    oh yeah,
    speaking of rants,
how about the guy that demands payment in five days
but takes five weeks to send the part?

I've got a couple of those going right now.

I always like to see kids getting into something like hot rodding that is I think a great hobby and a way to keep younger kids busy rather then dealing with some bullshit hobby like getting into trouble. You tell the kid to PM me and I will decide if I want to buy it for him and he can pay me back in the two weeks. I don't mind helping out if I find he's sincere about what he's doing.

I figure such matters on an individual basis. A few years back, I had an '83 Caprice I wanted to get rid of for $500. A kid that worked at the NAPA across the street from where I work wanted to give me $50 a week. I said OK--but I held the title until it was paid for. He held up his end of the deal, as did I. Kids are no different from adults; some you can trust, some you cant. I can tolerate a broke kid trying to buy something a lot better than I can the guys that I know for a fact have the money that try to give me the "Jeez, can ya hold it for me for an indefinite time period? Things are kinda tight this week...." bullshit, when I see them out spending $100 on dinner in a nice place three nights a week.

im the guy that gives shit away if im not using it. i kind of hate to sell things unless they are over 100 bucks.

im redoing my car now and lucky and steve are helping me a lot. whatever comes off the car that im not using, they get to fight over.

i sell some things sometimes, but most of the time its just a pain in the ass.

p.s. anyone who doesnt take paypal or a CC (where i can use my paypal debit card) i usually dont buy from......bottom line is i cant get to the post office until saturday sometimes .so if i buy something on a sunday, the MO wont go out unti lsaturday and people get pissed.

the way i see paypal. is that it might be something i might not have sold unless it was for paypal. i would rather pay $3 per hundred than not make the sell.

Ask for a five dollar deposit it will make you both feel better. If he can't do that he never will get 30 bucks together.
