Bottom line - First come - first serve. If this guy backs out of the sale at the last minute, you're screwed. By waiting for a couple of weeks, you're basically putting yourself in a position of missing a possible customer with actual money. If he's so broke that he can't come up with 30 bucks, chances are pretty good that he'll back out at the last minute. I would ask him "so, what guarantee do I have that you'll have the money in 2 weeks, other than you just telling me you will? What's that? NONE? Ok, well if I still have it when you get the money it's yours. If someone else comes up with the 30 bucks first, it's theirs. Have a nice day."

that is prolly why i very rarely list anything here, toomany woulda coulda shoulda deals came my way, maybe just me but i make a living on ebay and using paypal just makes sense... i think if a man cant do 30 dollars now , chances are he can't later ...............dont feel bad it is yuour shit , sell it...

  3. We've all been Broke a time or two. Maybe that's why $30.oo is important to you now. When it comes to Young Blood I'd rather give it to them if they show any Class. Makes them Gratefull and they generlly Respect ya some. Gets them going in the Right Direction. Really, $30.oo, Hell most of us here between Beer, Smokes, and Condoms Piss away more than $30.oo a week. Not to mention the Gas we burn up just for the fun of Driving.

I'm "car cash broke" 93% of the time. If I'm in that situation, I don't even look at the classifieds... let alone try to buy something. If I do stumble on a deal, I never expect the seller to hold onto whatever they're selling till I at least put down a deposit, if not payment in full. It's just common courtesy.

Thanks, this thread just reminded me of some punk kid in California who stiffed me on a deal for a car almost ten years ago.

He took forever to get the money, and when he came up short, offered a pair of heads for the remainder. Still waiting for them. I forgot about it after all these years. Now I'm pissed off again. Time to collect. I think he owed me about 600-800 dollars. My usual interest rate for friends is 100%, compound that over the time, I want my convertable back -restored!

I knew he was young, and really wanted it, so I let him pick it up on good faith, he promised to ship me the heads. After the car left, he never returned my calls, and I had bigger things in life to deal with at the time, that's why I sold my project.

That kid just shot right to the top of my shit list. I need to fly out to Mountainview now.

It would be very interesting to KNOW how many folks here ... are just here ...

    You know ...

    1) no old car
    2) no money
    3) no skills at all car related
    4) No place to work on their project ... if they had one ...

There seems to be a very high percentage of whiners, cry babies and the like ... lately.
And ... All they seem to have is a attitude and a sorry one at that ... :(

I know that there are circumstances sometime that GO beyon our control ...

Young at home ... first job ...
    Divorce
    Layoffs
Unexpected bills and of course CHILDREN ... :)

But it seems lately that if you have 4 matching tires with good rubber, a paint job and a little gas in your fuel tank ... you are viewed as a " SNOB " or a Gold Chainer. These other folks wear Broke like a badge of honor ... and think you can build a car from nothing and be riding for less than $100.00
It would be very interesting to see IF ... all these whiners even HAVE a old car ...

I would say tough luck. I am pretty poor but understand someone needs to get rid of crap asap. Also think about it from a young doods perspective who is way into hot rods like me and see all these old doods hoarding sweet parts and wont let anything go cept for top dollar. or course i am just generalizing here but this has been my experience. If you are one of those nice guys who doesnt mind helping out a young punk then just ignore this part of my post. I hope to run into someone like you someday.

Well, maybe $30.00 is a lot for a kid, but at least he stated he needed time to get the bucks first thing upfront. You could be a future hero to him if he is new to the hobby, does $30.00 really make a big deal one way or the other? I'm in the process of working out a payment plan on a $900.00 item, same deal just more money.

I'm new to PayPal and the fees bothered me at first, then I sold a real piece of crap for a lot of money, that item is covering the fees this month. So, just list more crap!:D

  9. I could probably come up with a deposit. Would $1.39 hold it for me???:D:D:D

I think I can understand broke as well as anyone. Hell 3 years ago I went from 60K to zero in about 3 minutes.
What I don't understand is makeing a big deal out of being broke. Ya does the best ya can with what ya gots. If I see a part I can't live without I can usually find the cash somewhere. if I needed a 30 dollar grill shell I could probably find 30 bucks. If not I could proabably wait until another one came along and not keep someone else from makeing a deal.

I don't understand not haveing any place to build, I built on the driveway for years. I'd still be doing it if I didn't have to worry about folks trying to see if i'm doing anything physical.

  10. I have given my fair share of deals and have helped all sorts of rodders old, young, rich, poor.....My point is that why say you are going to BUY something and then ask to pay in 2 weeks.....If you ain't got the money you ain't got it....Its not like I was selling the whole car....I amd selling a $30 part....

Considering the average American credit card debt, this is a rather altruistic statement. I would bet most of us here have mortgages and car payments.

  12. Exactly.

  13. When I've been too broke to come up with the money to buy something..

I JUST DON'T FUCKING GET IT!

and I DON'T BOTHER THE FUCKING SELLER!

  15. I only hold things for friends. If i'm selling something,It's first guy with the cash gets it.NO exceptions!I'm not trying to make buddies,i'm trying to make money. Most of the time when a friend wants something I have,i'll just give it to him and tell him to pay me when he can. But,no friend-no deal.

Aha!! When I first read this title , I thought "I Knew it"" Figured it was posted by the seller on E Bay that had a pair of 45 fin buick drums with 40 hubs in them & new bearings that closed at 1447.00 $ ----------
Thats right ---over fourteen hundred bucks!! I KNEW the guy would not come up with the dough & here is the proof. :D Oh well, perhaps there is somebody willing to shell out that much for so little.

    Nice.

That's the funny thing about the internet. It allows anybody who has the physical capacity to sit at a computer to be an "expert" on the forum(s) of their choice.

Sure there's dudes who are really fuckin' proud of the fact that they built their car without spending any cash... and usually the car looks like it.

When I was young and even more strapped for cash than I am now I was content if I could keep my car running. As I get older I realize that I'm not as satisfied with the hobby unless I'm able to have my rides be the way I want them to be. Just having an old car isn't good enough anymore. It has to be as right as I'm able to make it... and 9 times out of 10 that's gonna cost you something. Materials, parts, tools, garage rental, expert assistance, it all adds up.

You're a dumbass if don't hunt for deals, but no matter how you go about it, this is one expensive hobby and you should know that going in.

give the kid a break, he's not a gold chainer like some people....

30.00 bucks could mean difference between paying a bill or not, etc. gas money.

    who knows....

i'm broke too so i understand,

If you sell your crap on EBay, you don't have a choice about PayPal fees, you as the seller HAVE to eat them, you'll get your auction pulled if you make the buyer pay. I always use PP when I sell, it makes stuff go alot smoother, and thats one less trip to the bank I gotta make, so the fee is probably about the same as the gas it takes my SUV to get to the bank... I don't mind too much if a seller doesn't want PayPal, but I also don't think that seller should expect lightning fast payment, I ain't gonna take a vacation day at work to get you a cashier's check for a light bezel or an ashtray or some other rinky-dink piece of shit. The only thing that chaps my ass is when they want to charge a handling fee... Now, if its some bigass thing that is gonna take crating or you making a custom box, I can see it, but if I buy somethin' small and you don't have a somethin' small box, it ain't my problem, horde boxes like the rest of us.

    Fred.

I'm new to this stuff too. I've had my eye on a rear end kit at Chassis Engineering for some time. Please send me $500.00 bucks. I'll name my next kid after you.

    Tim

OK just kidding. That's a great offer to resolve the situation.

On the flip side. Why not ask the kid what he has to trade? As the seller you aren't that concerned about the money. Maybe he has some vintage Playboy magazines that you would really love to have.

One of the first HAMB deals that I did was a trade.

I listed a 57 cadillac for sale and another HAMBer said he was interested. I looked at his posts and found out he had a 46 ford project. He drooled and so did I. We traded and it was a win win situation.

Love HAMB style. Like www.eharmony.com only greasier. Or not.

But I do see the original posters point. Don't eat at McDonalds, skip the six pack, recycle some aluminum, or have a garage sale.

    It's only $30.00.

On the flip side, I was interested in a part, and I told the seller it would be my next payday until I could come up with the cash...and if he found a buyer before I could pay, to sell it!
That way he knew I was interested, and still had the option of selling it if someone had cash in hand.
I thought what I was doing was stand-up...was I wrong?

    Tucker
