Bomboras for traditional surf and Deadbolt for psycho-surf.

Stevie Ray Vaughn did a pretty mean version of Pipeline. Other than that the usual suspects. Trashmen, Ventures, Los Straitjackets. Hey, what about Jan & Dean and what was that other group- Beach Boyz or something like that?

The Ventures aren't a surf band.

I would recommend The Penetrators and The Bomboras.

  8. Red Elvises are amazing! Good ol Russian surf rock. Just saw them the other night up in Denver. Also the opening band Whiskey Throttle was bad ass!! Gotta check them out

Try The Surf Kings CD-Coming Up For Air, then Glass Bowls track.
    Dick Dale, etc.
Music is a big part of our world, but would rather read more about what is the best way to fix stuff on cars.

gotta respect the o.g. surf bands

  20. From a totally O/T group from another musical time altogether, I always liked the surf guitar style of the Monks "Skylab" from the "Bad Habits" album as much of parody as it was it seems worthy of a mention.

Slacktone!! nobody else can touch them. I saw that Surf Coasters band from Japan open for them once, and they were pretty good. But after Slacktone, I actually heard the Surf Coasters guitarist say we should stop playing.... haha!

Slacktone are just ridiculous musicians. the drummer and bass player both play with Dick Dale and Agent Orange. The drummer also is touring as the drummer for The Supersuckers. The guitarist is just as sick! Don't believe me? you SoCal folks should go see them this sat(7/7) at Suzy's in Hermosa(8pm). You will be blown away!!!

here they are on myspace: listen to Blast Bolero..just sucks they don't have anything from the live album on their profile.

Deke Dickerson's original surf band Untamed Youth is great one. You should give it a listen.

the PENETRATORS (not the early 80s brit or whatever band...) are one of my all time favorites. look em up, you can still find their second CD.

they had this secret-agent schtick in their shows, agents of the southern surf syndicate fighting evil forces of G.R.E.M.M.I.E.! they all had weapons specialties, one guy was a "jump vehicle specialist," saw photos where he was late to the show and came running in with a parachute dragging behind him.

one of the members was killed in a car wreck around 04 sometime, damned shame.

look em up, they were a trip, and DAMNED good too. had some in your face, kick your teeth in surf songs and some more flowing surf-instrumental stuff, not LIKE the ventures, but in that general area...

We saw the Dynotones at Viva and talked to them in between sets. a bunch of cool guys, they even talked about coming out here to the shitty coast to do a tour if they could get a couple dates booked.

I'm a greybeard too, so I grew up with the 'usual suspects'...

    Jan and Dean.
    The Beach Boys.
    The Surfaris.
    The Trashmen.
    The Ventures.
The Delltones. (Not Dick Dale, Aussie band)
    Dick Dale.
    Little Pattie
    The Denvermen.

Then I got all growed up and discovered heavy metal...

    Cheers, Glen.
