    Hi all,

I've been told that I should install a O2 Sensor to help tune my Hilborn MFI.

True or false? and if so, your thoughts please.

    Cheers,

A wideband sensor will help you fine tune the fuel curve if your fuel system is capable of it. Understand though, that you need to be within a “window” of operation for it to read correctly. Also, you need to be able to interpret the info correctly. A misfire from an overly rich condition will show a lean condition in the data. You need to look at trends in the data when you are in the beginning/ rough stages of your set up. A trend going from stoic towards rich, then suddenly lean indicates a rich misfire. The over abundance of fuel puts out the fire, and the “free” oxygen is seen by the sensor.

You also need a good meter to go with the O2s. I use one of these, Air-Fuel-Gauges. The standalone 2 5/8" is easy to read and see. Video recording of a 1/4 mile pass or road trip will let you go back and review the meter if you can't keep your eyes on it all the time. Mine let me tune twin carbs from 14 mpg up 21 on the highway!

Great information. Thank you. I’ll need to sit down and read it again and get my head around it.

Had to pick key points; max torque,
peak HP, then 'trend' fuel delivery as each point approached. Took a month incl. trials, but well worth the persistance reqd.
