Technical Obscure tool collecting

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by The Chevy Pope, Oct 1, 2023.

  1. Anyone else have a thing for picking up obscure specialty tools when you can? Aside from a few wrenches(like a blue point wrench I have from a WW2 tank tool kit) I have a few oddballs. Newest acquisition is an early thirties snap on piston pin tool for t-34 Ford four cylinders. Have a kd(before it was badged as kd) valve lifter for model a/b engines. A y block Ford rocker arm adjustment tool.
And a lifter removal tool.....that one is not so obscure but no one I've showed it to knew what it was lol. Actually have a drawer in my snap on bottom chest at home specifically for them. Home snap on box is a 1972 kra59 and bottom is a 40" from 1980. Now that I have an early Ford I may also start trying to piece together an early Ford toolset IMG_2023-10-01-12-25-43-788.jpg IMG_2023-10-01-12-26-34-241.jpg IMG_2023-10-01-12-26-54-231.jpg IMG_2023-10-01-12-27-07-970.jpg

I have the spring compressor like in the pic, not the exact one, but darn close.
I don’t collect oddball tools, but will buy an oddball tool if needed.
Speaking of oddball/obscure tools, @BJR comes to mind;)

  5. Yeah I don't exactly hunt them.....hence why I don't have many. But anytime I see one I grab it if I can. Actually have a handheld Stewart Warner tach I'll post here in a bit. That one was a gift from a cool retired vendor if vintage parts I got parts from for my 53 that retired

Not all that oddball. My dad had a wrench like this since before I was born. I think he had it to change the oil in his '51 Ford woody. Anyway I had it hanging on the wall for years until I needed it for the large oil drain on the truck oil pan on the 8ba in my '39 p/u. Found an other one for my old boss for the 59ab in his AV8 which his son now has. I found this one a couple of weeks ago at a yard sale for a buck. Don't need another one but for a buck someone I know will need it at sometime. Or not, and my son can deal with it at the estate sale after I'm gone. wr1.jpg wr2.jpg wr3.jpg .

Just a suggestion, why don’t we move this to the “antiquated” section of this forum…

Do you attach it to your oil pressure port ? or just hold it against a metal part like the intake manifold;)

  12. Its for checking stuff like belt and pulley speeds lol

  13. I don't know if they're obscure but I have a small tool box with Vlchek and Plomb hand tools that I don't use (all the other brands get put back into service). Some Flathead tools, like a fuel pump rod checking tool. I also have a mutli drain plug tool with a bottle opener on one end (was my grandfathers) and I have these:

I love old tools, that's what I mostly have at home and some at work too.

I bought one of those spindle thread chasers at a yard sale or the Habitat store a couple of years ago.
I've got a couple of actual odd ball pieces in the stash though.

Too much of my stuff is old and obscure. That is why I don't get much done most days...

  18. Site is how I found out most of what I know on the tools I posted lol

  19. I actually have a 70s era mini two drawer Kennedy tool box the guy that sold me my 53 Bel Air threw in on the deal when he heard what I wanted to do. Wanted an older metal small toolbox to fill up with mostly vintage snap on tools to keep strapped in the trunk with military surplus belts as a road box. Aside from a set of new (well they were new when I put them in the box three years ago lol) snap on fdx semi deep sockets and wobble extensions i actually have a decent amount of vintage stuff in it. Even have a 1950 3/8" drive snap on ratchet and a 1951 1/2" drive ratchet in there

  20. You should check out the Garage Journal, it's also run by Ryan and has an old tool forum (and many other things also).

Used one of these to back flush radiators/blocks when I worked as a mechanic at a dairy over 40 years ago, Found this one at a swap meet and I had to tell the guy what it was. I've never used it since I got it but you never know. flush1.jpg flush2.jpg

Some gear heads we’re telling me that some of their stuff is now chinesium too.

  29. Ive spent roughly $45k on the snap on truck since 2019. 95%+ of actual snap on tools(not blue point) are USA made. Majority of the remainder are made in Europe...like my pwz pliers made in Spain. Most power tools are overseas as are blue point tools and toolboxes.

I’ve the same tach from my dad. No paperwork or can though. Geeze, last I used it was for check pump RMPs on a compressor we put together some 25 years ago.
