OD Green or Military Color Rods

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SinastirSpeedShop, Oct 27, 2009.

  1. How a pic of some of that od iron, couldn't find any on your web page?

  2. Looks like it could've been a staff car, albeit a fast one, aka; the "motor pool sleeper"?

  3. Well its going to be on a 1954 chevy 5 window, so I know it would not be correct with a star, but I really like the look of the star. So I am going to try it and if I dont like it just resand it and repaint it..
If it was 46 or older I would do USAAF...

  4. yes that Nova is sweet... I miss my 66

Restored a Viet Nam era Dodge M37-B1 truck. A good source for lettering and marking supplies, both in vinyl and stencils is http://www.militarystencils.com/

For a source of paint in the appropriate colors try http://www.rapcoparts.com/

For general info the Military Vehicle Preservation Association has lots of good stuff.

I used Gillespie Coatings OD319 lusterless spray cans on this bike. It's a WWII era color. went right over bare metal (too lazy to prime) and it covered very well and seems very durable. They sell it at armyjeeparts.com either in spray cans or cans for sprayers.

  12. Great looking bike spinman, my rig is done up with the Marine version Korean Conflict era.
I bought my Gilespie Coatings from AJP in PA. Actually the first batch I bought at a swap meet in Aberdeen MD.

I used Gilespie Coatings on my f-1. It has been holding up well.

I wonder what happened to all the old stencil cutting machines? We had 3 in the motor pool that made 3 different sized letters. The military must have had thousands of them. Now I guess they use computer printed vinyl peeloffs.

Stencil cutters still exist, but you're right. We mostly use vinyl for stencils now. unless its small lettering like warnings and cautions... they still get posterboard stencils. Vinyl stencils still look like crap, but the purpose of an aircraft paintjob is "Not to beautify the airframe, but to provide corrosion protection."
