Odd hammer

Can anyone school me on this hammer? There is a pin on the head and it can pivot on the handle.
Found 2 in a scrap pile. I think they are missing parts but it's a puzzler.

 

Someone’s idea of a better mouse trap. An inventor hoping to cash in, maybe for hammering around a corner? Making nail pulling more efficient? Believe me I pulled a lot of nails in my youth.
