Tomorrow we drive up, mon - fri will be clinical trials and discussing options, then driving back sat morning. Planning on taking lots of photos and vids.
They won't do any surgeries on this trip, if at all. But Dr. Chi invited us to stay at his house and we accepted! So I'll be in his ear alot! haha

We're back from my trip to John Hopkins to participate in clinical trials for the new Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL).
Thanks to Dr Chi and his wife for hosting us the entire time! And thanks to Mike and his team for all the work they put into this and especially for Mikes patience and detailed explanations!
Many of you are on edge to hear what happened, so I'm going to get right to it.

I spent 5 days of pattern recognition testing with a virtual environment. Pattern recognition, what that means is the mapping of the nerve signals recorded. As for me, I'm a brachial plexus injury, so the recorded from below the elbow.
They are not recording individual nerve signals but rather all of them simultaneously to create 1 pattern, and then assigning that pattern to trigger a movement from the MPL.

For example;
To point, you have multiple nerves firing and some not to extend your finger, close 3 fingers, support wrist, operate elbow and shoulder all of these are recorded as 1 pattern of signals. In addition, if you train the system with say 30% effort (strength or intensity) then you must use the same effort every time or the pattern changes and becomes unrecognizable by the system. And conversely, if you train at like 80% effort, you find that you will quickly tire and loose function.
Some patterns are closely similar and takes concentration to maintain a difference, like fine pinch and key grip.

The fewer the movements that are turned on the better it is. When more functions are added, it becomes less reliable and increasingly difficult to use. The video showing the arm following the guy with the glove, was visually recorded much like a kinect with x-box . The glove had visual points for reference.

For someone with no function at all, the MPL is a huge help! For me, it would really be a decrease in function rather than an increase. Looks like at least 10-15 years before its viable for me, so the best course of action now is wrist fusion and tendon transfers. I've got it scheduled for the end of January. Just trying to find a way to more than an open and close thing.

sorry it's been awhile.
been a bit bummed out with not getting robot arms!
I'm getting tendon transfer surgery in the left hand Jan 30, 2014.
They will fuse my wrist, fuse lower thumb joint to opposing index, fuse top thumb joint (at nail) straight, middle thumb joint will move, then cut the tendon off at inside of wrist and re-route tthru arm to backside and attach to thumb for thumb extension (thumbs up), so when i want to thumb up i do wrist in.

Those robot arms were probably metric anyway. At least you will have significant improvement in that left hand. I noticed that it wasn't much help to you in the first video you posted.....and you can shower with it too!
