Most were 16" x 4" but there were some that were 16" x 3.75"(ish), 15"x?, and there were also some AWESOME 18"x? that are pretty hard to find now. There are some lucky individuals here on the HAMB that own some 18"-ers.
I think they were considered "high clearance" after market wheels. Not sure what specifically they were made available for. Service trucks, maybe??
Thanx, Scooter... I wonder how hard two 18in-ers would be to find? Anyone happen to know if any new repop wheels can be purchased, especially if they could be a tad wider? Gary
Along the lines of what scooter said, i had heard the 18" were primarily exported and were more common in Africa (and maybe So America as well).
Nobody is making reproduction wide-five wheels. And if you find some 18-inchers, you better have a thick wallet, unless the person doesn't know what they're sellin'. Very desirable! I LOVE wide-fives and would LOVE to own a set, but they have just gotten so out of control. I guess you could modify some 16" wheels. Seen that done before. Do a search for "Todd Wilt". He did that on his roadster.
I'm pretty sure that the 16" x 3.75" came out on the 60 h.p. cars, and the 16" x 4" came out on the 85 h.p. cars ant trucks. There are also 19" wide 5 wheels that came on the 9n tractor.
Circle trackers still use wide 5 wheels. They are readily available in steel in sizes up to 15 X 12 and in alum in 15 X 14. Various back spacing is available also.
The V8-60 wheels are 16 x 3-1/2", and are not super common these days. The other OEM sizes were 16 x 4" and 16 x 5" (Lincoln). The 19" "wide-5" wheels on the Ford tractor are NOT the same bolt circle as the p***enger car or truck. The 18" wheels are aftermarket pieces from the period. They are VERY rare these days, and carry a premium price. I have seen pairs go for over $1200.00. There are aftermarket wide-5 wheels for racing, as has been mentioned, but nobody is reproducing the factory wheels.
I picked up a set of 18" last summer. If I told you guys what I paid there would be some very pissed off people!! It appears they were never mounted, still had the part #'s painted on the inside hoop! and no rust! The guy found another set and as soon as the snow melts down Im going to pick up the other 2! Using 2 for sure on my 30' project
I got a set of 16x5.5 with reversed rim and thinner material in both the hoop and center ?no one can tell me what they came from
The 18" ones sound nice, but not on my budget. For that, I'd get some nice Halibrands! Appreciate all the info... keep it coming, please! Gary
I have a '42 3/4 ton with wide fives, Unfortunately its 650 km away, it has a m***ive tire on it, I wonder what size the rim is? You can just barely see it in the background of the pic....
Thank you for not participating in inflating prices on these parts to absurd levels. If you find a pair that you cannot use, let me know. I will pay a realistic price.
its not an absurd price. its supply, and demand. now, i'm not saying ebay, hershey and a few other large swap meets havent inflated prices, but once the "rat rod" "rockasilly" thing dies down a bit, and they all move on to other interests such as olympic rules compe***ion freezer defrosting, hens tooth collecting or horse hair macrame, prices will come back down a bit. look at it this way, if you had a pair of flibbidyjibbits that i REALLY wanted to put on my 39 fluggeldorf one door coupe sedan roadster delivery pickup, and they aint repopped, and they were a factory option, or an aftermarket piece back when they were new... you'd want to get as much $ for them as you could. i mean, we arent communists, are we? capitalism isnt that bad of a thing. i equate this to people who complain about "professional" athletes salaries. who cares if José Jiménez leaves the astronaut corpse and gets a spot as a curler for the long island iced teas making $42 gozillian bux a year? good on him! i know it'd make ME smile...
There are more original sizes than most people realize, because 3/4 and 1 tonners used them until 47...some are normal wheels, some were separate lock ring type. I tried to figure out what there was from various parts books and service bulletins but never really figured it all out...I just don't know enough about the bigger than 1/2 ton trucks or their model designations. All of that stuff, though, is probably about as rare as the V8 60 wheels...
Yes its suply and demand for me the 18 inchers is completly worthles beacuse i dont want them more suply than my demand for others its different
The 18" I have are painted army green, so Im thinking these were suppose to go on a military vehicle. Standard trucks were suppose to have them also, like the postal and service trucks. A buddy of mine seen a complete set of 19" wide 5's that had "GoodYear" stamped on the hoop. He did some research and found out GoodYear made 19" for higher clearance in the mud and snow, apparently few were made and sold. The set of 4 he seen sold for $3500!
I like the wide 5s myself but will just have to stick with the affordable ones myself. I have a couple sets but I do need one more of the v8-60's that are 3.75" wide. If any of you fellas haveone you would be interested in selling for a fair price please send me a pm.
wheel vintique makes a billet wide 5. with a 4.5 or 4.75 bolt circle. they offer a 16x 5.5 and a 16x 7" wide wheel. they come polished, but look good powder coated. they use the 36-39 hub cap. -danny
Close, but different bolt pattern. I have a set of 3.5" inch wheels. I didn't think the wide 5 versions were that rare.
If you need a narrow wide five..find some English Ford prefect rims ..they look like wide fives but a smaller bolt pattern, and have square 'slots' in them. they are 16x3.5 hoops ,and American ford 16" wide five centres drop straight in..presto..instant V860 wide five!
I know that 4.5 & 4.75 bolt circle is not a wide 5 pattern, wide 5 is 10.125" bolt pattern. I was talking about the look of the wheel. It has the same half moon cut outs at the edge like a wide 5 wheel does, and it uses a wide 5 wheel hub cap. -Danny Sent from the best app on the web.
