Yep! t's the old route to Phoenix from the days before I-10 went through. Sad but that was just 35 years ago.

Old towns, gas stations long gone, trailer homes, old mines. Just a bit more interesting than I-10

  5. Adds an hour or so to the trip but that might be worth checking out.

It will add quite a bit more than an hour to the trip, but it will be more fun if you have the time.

  7. I have made that trip many times and all of the comments on this thread are exactly right. One thing to remember, if you are needing gas any time before Blythe, try to limp it across the border to the Flying J truck stop and the gas is about 45 cents a gallon cheaper than it is in California.

Chip's comment about Desert Center being inhabited by Zombies is true. That place gives me the creeps every time I pass it. What's with all the dead palm trees?

Yes, that is off X 17 -- curl around right at the gas station (go a little back west) to the place he describes... some neat cars there. I have never asked prices though.

  13. Now you two have me all interested. We may have to light a camp fire when we all get together, and you two can tell me these stories.:D

I was there last winter, and there were little red price tags in the bottom drivers corner of all the windows. I''ve never seen him use the big numbers like most car lots, but, he's had those little tags the hand full of times I've been by.

Made that trip a few times on 2 wheels. Was riding with a buddy one time when he dropped out of site in my mirrior. Turned around and found him crashed in the ditch next to the road after he passed out from the heat. Good thing he fell on his head.

The highlight is Quartsite. "Oh God" (Think Al Bundy).

It's nice how the State of California placed a rest stop directly across the interstate from that prison. This assures that any escaped prisoners will have a good supply of kidnap victims and cars to steal.

made that trip twice tis a long ride. i stopped at a air force museum to see some histort but across the road down a sandy road and we came to the biggest airplane junkyard...thousands of place just parked ever so neatly that was something to see. even world war 1 and 2 planes stored there....looking like they could fly off. some neat looking gas stops one in particular was a early am stop at a station made entirely of some kind of stone next door to a restaurant made from the same stone......after the oldtimer finished giving us the gas we asked him how the breakfasts were in the restaurant....he said "mighty good" so we stopped in and out walks the same guy washing his hands and saying...:what can i get you boys"......great memorys of our trip.....hoppys gone....just me left now

Yep, he does have 1 of the original Waldorf Nomads.
Painted it for him about 15 -16 years ago when I had my shop in AZ.
Richard Oldham is his name. Very "UNIQUE" man.
Ya ought to see sum of the cars (and I mean cars, probably over a hundred) he's got stashed in buildings all over Quartzsite.
    Sum unbelievable stuff.
He used to own over 10 GM dealerships in AZ.
Ya get on his good side, he'll cut ya some decent deals, @ least he did for me.

I asked him about a cadillac he had for sale. He said " it runs and drives" and just looked up into space. I said whatever and walked away. Jerk.

If you have a day to kill, you could hit Quartzite and head North and see the London Bridge in Lake Havasu, then go more North and take the old 66 up through Oatman, Kingman, Peach Springs and a bunch of other route 66 towns, the just travel the 93 or the 17 down to Phx.

  21. Now THAT sounds like a good trip.

Dude, if you have the time that would be the way to go. Miles out of your way though. Remind me and I'll tell you about the time one of Oatman's famous burros decided he didn't like the convertable top on my brand new rented Camaro....

Photos and memories for the cost of gas and 8 or so hours. This is "Cool Springs" in between Oatman ad Kigman on the 66. Last time we drove through, we met a group of guys from Sweeden on bikes, sat and shared stories and had bottles of sasperilla.

  24. You guys should make this run from Dallas! El Paso is exactly half way to LA, and you will have at least one birthday before you even get out of Texas!

I have been this way many times when traveling to AZ to visit family as a kid. Like others said there is hardly anything between those two points.

There is a small military museum I believe somewhere along the way but its been many years since I visited and forgot where exactly it is.

Maybe someone else here can chime in.

    Chiriaco summit. patton museum.

if you stop at the eastbound Cactus City rest area, and feel like some exersize, look for a locked gate on the east end. that is the access road to the towers off in the distance. go in for a little ways and there is a squashed model a and some some other 40's coupe in a ditch. If your into that kind of stuff.

Palo Verde nuclear power plant about 10 miles from Phoenix city limits. Interesting cloud formations above them reactors! I-10 is really a very boring drive!

Take the route through Wickenburg and then HWY 74 (Carefree Hwy) east toward Phoenix.....Especially if you are heading to the north valley because it won't take that much more time than staying on I-10.

    What prewarcars said :
If you have a day to kill, you could hit Quartzite and head North and see the London Bridge in Lake Havasu, then go more North and take the old 66 up through Oatman (ruler in Oatman is the MARE as in donkey), Kingman, Peach Springs and a bunch of other route 66 towns, the just travel the 93 or the 17 down to Phx.
Then you could stop @ the Hackberry general store(rt66) & have a rootbeer. Roadkill cafe in Seligman & the last pic is in Ashfork.
