www.lansingcitypulse.com<!--EndFragment--> The Knapps building, Lansings most spectacular but conspicuously vacant downtown landmark, will be restored to its 1930s Art Deco glory for a new life as a high-end retail, office and residential complex, city officials and developers announced at 1 p.m. today. This was one of three stores in Lansing where all shopped back in the day. Dinner in the basement, clothing upstairs. For a long time it was feared that this building would be razed and lost forever. Hot Rodders cruized the gut past this building for years.
Man, am I glad to hear it. I went to school right around the corner from the Knapp's store and it broke my heart to see it empty and think about it being torn down. -Dave
That is awesome news. Now if someone would invest some money in the RE OLDS museum, they seem to struggle to stay open year after year. Speaking of cruising the GUT, does anyone have the dates for the Car Capital Celebration (I think thats what its called) downtown. I never hear about them til the week of and have other plans.
I was bummed when they tore down the old monkey wards building on the corner of Michigan Ave. and Schaefer Rd. in Dearborn. That one opened up around the 1920's I believe. Now they're puttin' up a new office building..
At least they're putting something up. Seems most cities want to tear 'em down in the vague hope the empty lots will "attract developers". -Dave
