Technical Offenhouser valve covers from Speedway

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 46international, Aug 29, 2017.

  1. So I sprung for the high dollar valve covers $320 from speedway for my 292 Y block. After making up longer studs to mount them they were looking pertty good, that is untill I went for a ride. Oil all over the place, both covers were leaking from the front and rear. Checked the gaskets and saw that there was no clamping of the gasket. After looking closer I could see that the gasket surface was not flat! looks like about 3/32" lower in the center of the cover. Luckly I just bought a mill from a buddy and could fix them but it ****s to have to repair a set of brand new $320 valve covers. Has anyone run into this?

Rant? Sounds completely justified to me.

Speedway AND Offenhouser won't know you got a POS set unless you sent them back - or at least sent them pics of how BAD they are. For OVER 3-bills, I'd be sending those turds BACK! Maybe try your luck with a MOON pair next?

Some companies just don't get it - the MORE we spend, the higher our expectations... :(

geesh.................... call them, they have always been good to me. not my favorites but still. this is Offys fault not Speedway. I would included both in an email or letter.... The Offy manufacturer will make them good.

That's an Offy problem, not a Speedway issue. Send them both and email and they will make it right.

Yeah I'd just call and get a new set. They will absolutely let you return a defective part.

Also offy makes them speedway is just one of the many places that sell them.

You probably did the right thing, fixing yours. Chances are a whole production run was bad. You would have just exchanged a set for another bad set.
You should message Speedway and Offy, tell them about the problem. Also that you repaired them. You might get a job fixing all of them.

Put a straight edge on the surface, take a picture and contact Speedway at the very least. I've had good luck with them in the past and if they want to send you a replacement pair, get a hold a tech guy there, get his name and have him physically check them before shipping another pair out. I've had this done in the past with more than one vendor.

wall section in that area probably isn't to thick. If you try to flatten the surface,if its out that much you might not have to thick a wall left.Id send them back but you may find other sets aren't much better. Some of the old corvette sets I have don't check much better.

What more did you expect from Chinese parts made by small children? Speedway is the last place I'd purchase parts from.

Last time I checked, the Offenhauser factory was on Alhambra Avenue in Los Angles and never saw any small children operating machinery.

Not necessarily speedway has been known to rip off other vendors/producers and produce and sell it as their own.

Whatever your choice of action, I hope you walk away satisfied ( at least mostly). I've gotten jammed with "NEW" parts that are junk right out of the box- big dollar items? Go to battle. Smaller stuff ( under 100 bucks?) with shipping and re-stocking charges , it's not worth getting worked up over.

    Good luck with it

If you touch them with a mill, you own whatever happens to them. You might get lucky and be able to fix them, but I'm with everyone else. Call Offenhouser first, and ask them what they want you to do with them. If they won't do anything, send them back to Speedway.

new to me as well are you confusing Speedway with So-Cal maybe?
Anyway send them back or at least tell them in case they (Offy) have a machine or operator fault, looks like they have a QC problem.

Thanks for warning the rest of us about your problem. Many rodders on the HAMB have bought what turned out to be real **** from Speedway.

If grown *** adults are turning out **** like the OP received maybe Offy ought to switch to China for their manufacturing of parts. Manufacturing of valve covers isn't rocket science.
