Did this rear deck probably 20-25 years ago. Swiped this picture off ebay when this car was for sale. A local Boeing guy built this cool coupe. I think the car ended up in New York state.

When did louvers come to be? I've got a mid 50's traditional A Tudor build going together right now and am debating some louvers. With a 56 target date for the build, would louvers have found their way onto the car during this time period?

I think you're looking for something where the stripe cuts the louver rather than goes around the problem like I did.

In some form or another they have been around as long as cars themselves. But to answer your question a bit more directly, as far as hot rods go they seem to have become popular right after World War II. My theory is (and it's been supported by many old timers) was that most of the first hot rod type louvers came off machines that were war surplus from the aviation factories in the L.A. area. I have also heard of the guys slippin' the press oporator a case of beer to do them after hours in the factories too... Can you imagine Home land security these days on that one?
If you look back though, even the race cars of the teens and twenties used them, so damn near any era you want to build to they are accurate.

Well I've been punchin louvers for 30 plus years and punched a lot of different things and many different patterns. These are some different things I have punched. Enjoy

Been punching the Dash Plaques for the Frog Follies for over 20 years and here's just a sample. These are 3/4 inch and can punch 1,2,or 3 at a time.

Every 32 Ford I've owned I have punched the frame. These are on a 3-window I currently own.

Here are some louver stripe panels I have collected. First one is done by Old Bob sign (Larry Hansen) Here on the HAMB.

Next is done by Josh Shaw here on the HAMB.

Next is done by Magic here on the HAMB.

My Louver plates several years ago. Never got a ticket with these plates but I did get stopped several times.

My defaced HAMB Alliance tag with 1" louvers.

and lastly a chrome plated belt buckle that I made a long time ago.

This is a pic of the side panel and louvers on my modified, the first 3 louvers go in and the bulge is to make room for the alternator, I figured that the first 3 louvers might blow a little cool air on the alternator. I had mine punched at Tardels.
