Thanks for the Special Bolt Chart, Harv. I saw it years ago and am happy to now be able to make a copy!

  3. I just ordered stuff from Summit recently and since I am using aluminum Vintage Air U-Bend-Em A/C lines on this project, I always order extra since I don't always get it right the first time, so that gets it close to the $99 threshold, but I had to add some trim screws to make the free shipping. I used to get fast one or two day delivery out of the Sparks, Nevada warehouse with their OnTrac carrier but not anymore. Eight of the nine items ordered came in four days, but the A/C line I needed the most took six days because it was shipped in a different box from the same warehouse in Sparks. The trim screws I didn't really need came all the way from Texas in four days. They sure didn't make any money on that order! I try to buy local when I can at Autozone, O'Reillys and Napa because they can usually get what they don't stock from Phoenix overnight. I'm lucky I know a couple of young guys that know really know their stuff at Autozone and can usually help me.

FedEx jumped their rate up 5.9% September 20, 2021 and UPS did the same December 26, 2021. In addition, UPS is now charging a surcharge to deliver packages over a certain size and weight to rural customers. USPS rates went up 4.3% January 9. 2022. USPS could save a lot of money if they would quit hauling all those catalogs that show up at my house unasked for. They usually go directly into the trash if I can get them there before the wife sees them.

There is a local fastener store that I use for my hardware. Going to the big box stores, finding the size or head shape you want will make you cuss because you need 6 of something and they only come 5 to a box. I find I don't pay any more using the local store and those guys are always interested in what I'm putting their parts in. A lot of times, they've come up with suggestions for fasteners that I didn't know existed and actually worked better than what I was thinking. I wouldn't give two hoots for Fastenal, they want me to buy 100 at a time when I only need a few.

My local Ace Hardware actually started as a Mom and Pop store back in the '50s. They bought into the franchise but operate the same as they always have, exactly as you describe. They always give me the royal treatment when I'm just spending a few bucks and take the time to match up what I need with a smile. Hard to find service like that these days.

  8. I was surprised when I recently found I can buy chrome bolts for less at my local True Value Hardware store than anywhere I can online! They have the best bolt and fastener selection I've ever seen anywhere.

I also just ordered two more Vintage Air hard lines from Summit, one a #10 X 30" and one #10 X 36". They cost far less than the free shipping minimum of $99 but I needed them. What's really crazy is that both are coming from the Sparks, Nevada warehouse in two separate boxes! My $10.99 shipping charge for shipping sure can't cover their costs. I don't know how they make a profit doing that.

It's amazing how valuable a quality hardware store is. I didn't know until I walked into an ACE hardware in central Texas. My brain pretty much exploded.

I think Summit should just start opening up small speed shops around the US. We have a Pep Boys """"""""""""""""""speed shop"""""""""""""""" here in Baltimore and I stop by every once in awhile to pick up the occasional fitting or gasket.

The price of Everything has bumped up, I buy from Speedway, Summit, Jegs, RockAuto, PartsGeek all good sources IMO. Any and all companies have to make some money or they will no longer be a source, the car related industry is very competitive so I don't believe it's shipping price gouging as they will lose their market share. The shippers themselves are having problems of their own and the first 3 companies I mentioned deal with any shipping to you problem, replace your order instantly with a free return ship label N/C to you. My experience with shippers of late, UPS still good, FedEx/not good, USPS same slow and the regular mail service has turned to Poop in Northern Wisconsin.

I pay more to not get anything from Amazon; My first choice is local retailers and next is auto parts suppliers online. I view this as a hobby, necessary for me but NOT an investment. I now realize that time is more important than money and I hate buying Chinese junk more than shipping price inflation.
If you don't use local business, they go away; now you have no choice at all.

I came across a great idea the other day while surfing the web. If your order isn't big enough to get free shipping just ad a gift card to the order. Then use the gift card on your next order.

Same here; there's a great one in Sanford that had been in the family for years. Really nice people, and the store still has the wood floors and bells that ring when you open the door. I get my saws sharpened there, too. My only complaint about them is that they are too far away from me, so I'm not able to frequent the store as often as I would like.

My local Ace has a huge fastener department as well, and a large of paints (to keep it semi on topic) for model “cars” AF65675B-8BB3-4FD1-BB7C-D6FCFE29BAD8.jpeg 6557B34B-6EAB-4115-96B0-DEF1B64843E7.jpeg

  18. Somebody mentioned Rockauto........I buy most of my needs from them for my avatar car (w/late drivetrain) or daily drivers, always real happy with them, and I've got to add this:
Last year I bought a power steering pump from them that came in damaged. I went to their website, filled out the form, and got a reply that asked if the part was fixable, and if so, would I be willing to repair it if I was reimbursed for my time. When's the last time somebody offered you that??? excellent, but even better was when I told them it wasn't repairable, they told me they would ship the part out as soon as Fedex notified them the return was in transit. I got the part to Fedex at 3pm, and at 9am the NEXT MORNING, the doorbell rang. It was Fedex with my replacement part.!!!
