I did some wet sanding yesyerday. The paint is on thick and is still slightly wet. My plan is to sand a little and then let the paint cure more.

  2. Can't wait to see the results! I'm betting most people will not be able to tell the difference.
Ditto on the Purdy brushes, I painted houses for a couple of years and as with anything, the right tool for the job makes ALL the difference.

Ok, finally had some time to buff some of the paint. I sanded it with 600 then 1500 and finished off with 2000 grit. Turned out pretty shinny. I took some pictures in the shop and out in the sun. I think it looks good. Hopefully, I can get the rest of it buffed in the next few days.

I think it looks great! However, for the life of me I still can't understand, since you did all that work sanding and buffing, why you wouldn't have just sprayed it. Is it more about bragging rights than end result??

Seems like it would be cleaner, no over spray and last time I looked, auto paint was kinda expensive.

As I stated early on I like to do different things. I know I can paint a car in the traditional way. I have read about brush painting cars and figured I would give it a try. If you think it isn't the right choice than don't do it on your project. It's fine with me. However, this might be a viable option for those who don't have all the equipment or experience to spray their own car. Bottom line is I think you are "confused" because you are thinking about it too much. Just take it for what it is.

  9. to hell what the neighbors might think...paint it any way you choose....I painted my 56 Dodge with Rust-O-Leum and a ROLLER !!!....It's not a million dollar paint job, but it will never rust a n most important.....I like it...Everything is painted...even the chassis and the underside of the fenders and body.....If people don't like it ???...Fuck 'em !!!

I remember back in the late 50'd dad painted my younger brother's 1950 Chevy bright red with a special brush. Remember it looking pretty darned good. Dad was a house painter.
There are a lot of advantages now days in painting with a brush or roller. That's what sandpaper and buffers were invented for. Hell they still sand and buff spray jobs so what's the big deal?
Ya ever seen a real Model T or Model A original paint job?.

Just to set the record straight, Yes the brush painted roadster with the map painted on the deck lid was mine. I built it from an extreme basket case. I did not paint the map on the back though. The new owner did.

As for getting in the roadster show parking area, I wasn't trying to be "sassy" about the roadster show rules. I was just trying to put my car in one of the greatest roadster gatherings in the west. Thanks for all the kind words Ron. Ron is always very supportive of my projects.

  12. I'm at the end of a multi-year, frame-off rebuild on my 54 Ford and I'm painting it with Rustoleum and a roller.

I haven't started laying down paint yet....still stripping down to metal and priming.

I had a 49 Club Coupe with a high dollar paint job on it and I'd worry about it all the time. To hell with that. This paint job is going to look very nice, but I'll have about $150 tied up in it total.

I want that single-stage look to the paint....IMHO, clear coat paint jobs don't look good on old cars.

Different brush strokes for different folks. Fair enough.

  18. Cool. Any additives? Penetrol or eqivelant? Or just straight out of the can?

    Thanks! (also) Mike

I used Penetrol. It helped with the brush strokes. I would thin the paint if I did it again in this heat.

  24. You have to consider the cost of having a big enough compressor to handle spraying a car, having the appropriate moisture traps in the air supply line, the cost of a paint gun over the cost of a brush, the absence of overspray, etc. I used a roller to paint mine and didn't have to worry about overspray on everything in my garage or about masking off entire windows and wheels/tires. The sanding and buffing isn't that bad. You're going to wind up buffing a little with any method anyway. Some guys may do it for bragging rights but some do it to save a lot of cash.

We have a stock '32 Chevy that was a factory brush paint on delivery. It held up fine until 1980 when we gave my dad a birthday present he never expected. We found a auto brush painter and gave him the job. The paint job took over a month of complete but it is still in decent shape. The car is garaged though. I still see good quality brush auto paint jobs at Collector Shows.
