I'm working on the restoration of Ohio George Montgomery's Multi-Maverick. I haven't been able to find much information on it. I have the Hot Rod magazine article about the car and a few other photos, just not enough photos with close up details. It ran a blown Boss 429, but not sure what transmission it had. I've contacted Joe Aroso, who owned and raced it before the current owner purchased it. He was unsure of when some of the modifications were done to it, whether they were done by George or Joe and his brother. The car was originally built by Chapman Race Cars in Ohio. If anyone has any information, photos, or knows of someone who worked for Chapman Race Cars, please contact me. Trying to be as accurate as possible with the restoration.
Chapman Automotive was out of Chicago not Ohio. Not sure what happened to Phil Chapman though. Have you spoken with Gregg Montgomery George's son, he might have some info. I dont think that George ever raced the Maverick. It's been a long while since I talked to George about that car and if I remember correctly it was built because of a deal with the model car company and was built as more of a promotional tool than something to race.
I have left a couple messages with Gregg. The story I got was Ford wanted George to debut a new car, that's when MPC got involved and funded the project. I was told NHRA outlawed it. So, it went on the show circuit for a while. Then was sold to the Aroso Brothers. They ran it for a short time with an injected big block Chevy. I've seen a couple of pictures of it on the show circuit where it had radiused wheel wells. They have been returned to original. There has been a few other changes made at some point also. Being that it had a short racing history, it is fairly unmolested.
That'll be great to see it when you're all done with it and I'm not even a big fan of Mavericks, probably because I remember riding in the back of my buddy's sister's 6 cylinder car. Man that thing was a dog...
That was a slick nice looking Maverick at that time still today, Many race car in different classes was Band over night by NHRA around 1970 ish
I think NHRA didn't like that it had an adjustable wheelbase. It could run as a Gasser or an Altered.
The wheelbase could be lengthened nine inches. The front fenders have a removable panel, that dzus on and off, where the wheelwells are. Then get replaced with a panel that moves the wheel opening nine inches forward. The body is all fiberglass and has opening doors.
You might see if Paul Frost is still around he lives in Troy Ohio or used to. If you cannot find a number try calling quality machine in Dayton Ohio they will have contact information. Please keep updates posted.
I have a copy of that magazine. The article is a little vague. There is suppose to be another publication that did a feature on it also. But I haven't been able to come up with anything yet.
Right now I'm still in the research stage. I have corrected a few things that I was able to figure out off the photos I have.
