Hey guys, I just changed the oil on my Hudson (308) and believe it or not but the local parts house had the filter cartridge on the shelf (score!) anyway do I need to do anything special for the filter canister? With a normal small block filter I would fill the filter with oil but with this canister there isn't anyway to fill it with oil. Would it be ok to just start the car and it fill up? Thanks

On my '57 I would always wash the canister out with a little kerosene before I put the new cartridge in. I would also fill the canister about 2/3 full before I put it back on. Make sure you get the old gasket out, before you install the new one!

not a good idea to start a car knowing you will have no oil pressure...

  4. I'm ***uming you have the stock accessory oil filter canister bolted vertically on the left side of the block just ahead of the starter. I've had several Hudsons with this. Absolutely wash out that canister with some solvent and soak or **** out the old oil every time you change filters. And it wouldn't hurt to remove the lines right now and blow them clean too so you are sure the limited pressure is getting in to the filter and returning to the block. You won't have to repeat line-cleaning for years.

When you have the bolt down lid off and the new canister about to be dropped in, there is nothing stopping you from pouring oil into the canister. The oil filter is universal: everyone has them now and always will as many pieces of farm and ranch equipment use the same sized can.

Isn't this the old Fram by-p*** filter offered on most of the eary fifties vehicles? If so, you can pour all the oil you want into the canister and it will all immediately run into the engine pan just like it was designed to do. The restricting orifice will prevent loss of oil pressure just like it does when the engine is running under normal conditions.
Just clean the canister and, if you like, the lines and drop the filter in and install the cover. It will fill gradually when the engine is running.

Thanks guys, I tried just pouring oil into the can and it just ran out into the motor so I said screw it and put the filter in and ran the car. It all worked out ok. I've driven the car since with no negative results.
