I usually square deck the block. But, no, this is a matching number deal, so i left it alone for the customer. Heads/intake both NEW, and witness marks on gskts indicate a really good seal this last time, all around the ports' on both sides of the gaskets. It's sure not a typical problem. When i find out what it is, i'm sure it will be a new one for me. Rick, did you see the picture of the intake floor on page 4? How do you like THIS site?
I don't know for sure. I got the intake back from Edelbrock, and sealed the bottom with Glyptol just in case it's porous. I put the intake back on with Corteco embossed gaskets, and Ultra Black silicone that i let set for 2 days before adding water/oil/fuel. I drove the car a couple blocks and it ran like **** and died at stops. I revved the motor high and cupped a hand over the carb to possibly **** dirt from the airbleeds, and it idled. OK, probs in the carb for this particular issue. I pull the front bowl off the Holley, and there's **** in the bowl like clumps of silicone, or the crust that builds on a battery post. The metering block on this NEW Holley is just disintegrating like a cookie in milk (pic in a minute). I remove the jets, idle screws and power valve to find more buildup. A LOT behind one of the jets. The main body and float bowl's are nice, so the probs isolated to the metering block. At 1st i thought the customer was snorkeling the neighbor, got caught, and someone put something in his tank. Anyway, i won't post MY theory, but i think it's fixed. Any guesses?
I was having the same problem with my 383 which also runs SR Torquer heads and eventually found that one of the bolt holes for the rocker studs was drilled all the way through to the intake port - came that way brand new. The oil was finding it's way past the threads and fouling the plug. Check it out.
I know... old thread but I'm having a very similar problem. Did you ever reach a conclusion to this? I'm on my 3rd set of intake gaskets and can't figure out how the oil is getting into my intake ports.
