Hello, I recently inherited a 1955 Fordor. It has the original 272 y block. It was previously converted to a spin in filter. From what I know there has been a constant leak from the oil filter adapter. I am having issues stopping the leak myself once I got the car to central Florida from Ohio. I have ordered oil filter adapter kits from David Carpenter, CASCO, and now I found a ford oem one on eBay part # B7A-6882-A. This shouldn’t be as hard as this is lol for an oil filter adapter, I have been told that I need to go back to original canister which I don’t have or the nut isn’t tight enough, or the gasket is bad etc. etc. Can anyone help me get this issue fixed? I just want to drive the car. If anyone is in central Florida (Sanford) I’m willing to pay for some help thank you for any assistance god bless
Post a picture of the filter/adapter, so we can see what you have. Pretty sure they only changed the plate and nut when they went to the spin on filter...so it's likely the gasket is leaking. We can't see what you can see, until you post pictures of it. welcome to the hamb btw this is the original spin on adapter that was on the 292 in the 59 Edsel I had, before and after taking it off to change the gasket and clean things up a little.
Yes, sir the gasket is leaking. Here is a pic of the gasket kit i bought from classicteebird. i will try to get pics of it installed if I can get under the car this weekend. I did torque it to 25 ft pounds as the David Carpenter directions called for.
you might need to take some time to figure out why it's leaking. Perhaps you could assemble the adapter to the block without the gasket, and see how much gap there is between the outer edge of the adapter, and the block, and compare it to the gasket thickness? to make sure it's being compressed enough to seal.
I remember reading about this problem that over-tightening or years of use will slightly distort the adapter causing the gasket to leak. The "fix" iirc was simply pressing it back in shape, but check over on a Y-block forum for better details.
Bolt the adapter to the block without a gasket and see what gap there is between the adapter and block. It needs to be even all the way around I order to seal. make sure the surface on the block where the gasket seals is surgically clean and free of any burs or scratches. I put a thin layer of silicone on my gasket and then tightened the nut very carefully and it hasn’t leaked, However I have to get the filter on just right or the filter gasket leaks.
would you happen to know what y block forum? I have asked a few times on FB but I don't think I am over tightening it. I have done hand tight, it leaked, torqued to 25 ft pounds and it leaked as well. I was smart enough to order an extra gasket, but everything looks to be of good quality. Very frustrating issue because its simple only thing holding me back from driving her. If it was just a drip, I wouldn't mind but this is significant. I've put $100 of oil on my driveway already trying to correct this issue.
yes, I tried the permatex gasket maker from a post I read on here. I let it sit for two days to make sure it cured. started it up and didnt leak until she got up to pressure then started to stream oil. Thought I had it fixed emotions at an all-time high and low lmfao in the matter of seconds
Had my new engine break in interrupted 5 times due to this, shitting bricks I’ll tell ya! Only thing that worked for me was to find an original Ford adapter and used the old gasket that came off the engine I found it on, verified it had not been stretched from over tightening and applied a small amount of Indian head gasket maker to the old hard rubber gasket, I believe the trick was the can of the old black gummy gasket maker( I’ve tried the permatex stuff and it’s not the same). Assembled and let sit for a couple days, had no leaks since, well not from the adapter
Is this all I need if I cant get the adapter to work or are there more parts cause i have none of the original parts canister parts. looks like i would still need a gasket and diaphram
Yes, I found the original Ford one that I posted a pic up above on ebay. I swear i've spent like $200 on just adapters not including oil. I will look into Indian head gasket maker
I’m also of the opinion the new silicone rubber gaskets available now are a part of the problem as well, way too flexible, after each failure, upon disassembly I found the gasket had worked it’s way into the adapter. This is why I used an old gasket.
i have been searching for the original gasket which if i have been reading correctly was a fiber gasket. i havent been able to track down any other OEM gaskets from ford.
Stock is best. I did mine 12 years ago. Hole to the top. Social forum here is good, go to the gray people icon at the top of the HAMB page, tap on it, tap on social forums, tap on brands, scroll and tap on 52-59 Fords, join. You can search in them too. Out of here the Yblocksforever.com is the best for all YBlock info.
The factory part number is EAA 6838-A. The Wix cross reference is 15751 which shows is available at Oriellys for just under 5 bucks. Hope this was helpful. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=577623&cc=0&pt=10974&jsn=931
ck Cline There was a link on Y-blocksforever.com that showed how to invert the metal adapter in a old style cannister and use a hammer hitting the center to bring the outer edges back to flat. I bought an extra gasket when I order the kit from Spin On Oil Filter Adapter Kit - 1 Per car-classictbird.com as you can see it is the same part number so i know I have the right gasket on there now.
If I want to go back to canister I can find all the parts except the diaphram plate and that nut that holds the bolt to block i guess
Are you absolutely sure it is leaking from the adapter? I had a leak I was sure was from the adapter but it turned out to be a bad filter. Another strange oil leak was the pressure line for the gauge leaking on to the filter and dripping off the end making it look like the filter housing was leaking.
I have an extra bushing/nut. Found this on the ground at my local "walmart" the other day. I new exactly what it was because I was just fighting with the leak on my 61 f100 junk yard save truck. Bubba had been using a vice grips on the bolt for so long I barely got it off, then could hardly get it tight to stop leaking. Note the oil all over the starter, and really all the way back on the frame on that side. Been leaking for a long time. So, I need the bolt, the can is shot, The bushing is yours if you want it. I'm sure its straight thread, not pipe, could probably be bought at McMaster Carr. Walmart...head cashier Russel, he lets me skip checkout most days.
Hi Guys little update!! I was able to get the leak to stop. Found an OEM oil filter adapter part 3 B7A-6882-A put it on and no problems. aftermarket gaskets are trash
