Hello, HAMBER's I just found out my 1956 235 inline 6 in not a 1956 but a 1959. Its about time to change the oil again but since I found out the new iden***y of my engine, I'm not too sure of the differences of the 1956 and the 1959 or if there are any at all dealing with oil filtering the oil. Would it be ok to run this engine without or with an oil filter.
It's o.k. to run without a filter. Oil filters were optional equipment on all the 235's and was a byp*** system only, filtering a portion of the oil and dumping it back into the pan. You'll have better oil pressure without one. The '59 has internal oil p***ages drilled into the block to oil the top end as opposed to the copper line under the lifter cover that the '56 had. Bottom line, change your oil every 3000 miles or so and you'll be good to go.
Depending on how many miles you drive a month more often oil changes might be better. Less than 500 per month I would change every 1000. 1000 was the standard interval when that engine was new. Modern oils are a lot better but even with a byp*** filter I would chanke at 1500. Oil is a lot cheaper than engine rebuilds.
I have a byp*** oil filter on the ford too. I kept it figuring its not gonna hurt the engine any to filter some of the oil. I don't know if you can convert your block to full flow or not, but I gonna do it to my flathead when it's time for a rebuild.
