Hey everyone, I'm learning a lot from everyone and appreciate all the help I've gotten the past few days but I have another dumb question. Is the oil filter for a 235 the same as a inline 250? How much oil and is 5w30 the go to stuff. Thanks!!!
I only use WIX, Baldwin and Motorcraft. Thirty eight years, nine boats, three dozen-plus sports cars, trucks, rv's and 4x4's later----I've never blown a motor or had an issue with any of them. The WIX air filters for International Scouts lately? Well that's a whole different matter. I'll letcha y'all know what WIX does for me after their defective filter choked my Holley 2210 to death a few months ago. Word of warning though---if your WIX a/filter was made in Mexico, do yourself a favor and check the rubber 'dipped' area that encompasses the steel mesh, especially on the inside. If it's thick on one side but very thin (looks almost brushed on), do not bother buying it---let alone installing it. 'Cuz bad joo-joo will occur. and force you to experience 'premature carburator rebuild-ism' ....
Years ago when I turned wrenches for the Ford dealership, they had a display of oil filters cut apart in the parts room lobby. There was an AC Delco, Motorcraft, Fram and one other filter, I can't remember the brand. Anyway, the Fram was a real POS, the AC Delco and Motorcraft were by far the best filters in the display. I personally use NAPA Gold filters in my cars
There's a guy on the 'net who spent a lotta time chopping up, dissecting and analyzing about 20 different oil filters a few years back. Pretty cool results, and well worth the search.... (oh yeah, and you'd do better using the Los Angeles Times and an old soup can than you would using a Framster. Or a Mr. Coffee filter)...
Filters for a 235 are not the same as a 250. I use Purolators because the local place doesn't carry Wix. The Purolator number is L20051. Asking about filters is like asking about oil. Everyone has their favorites. It's like asking about politics, religion or sex. For oil, I use Brad Penn. You might find someone who carries it locally or you may have to order it. As for the grade, the 5W30 is fine but see how the car likes it. If the oil pressure reads low, you may want a heavier grade, like 10W40 or a straight 40. For filters, I've found the best two (money dependent) was Wix and Purolator. Some cars use a spin on filter and others use a cartridge. I think that engine uses a cartridge.
5-30 is a bit on the thin side for that engine, use 10-30,10-40 or straight 30. Personally 10-40. Nothing on that engine is going to be the same as a 235. Like I said earlier just tell the parts bodies 70 Nova 230-250 for all engine stuff.
I only use NAPA Gold oil filters in my Acadian, which has a 194 6 in it. For oil I use 10-40 with some AC Delco Engine Oil Supplement to give it some Zinc content.
