Without removing the oil pan, does anyone know if the oil pump is in the same location on all 318 Dodge engine's? So far I've seen it (ONLINE) on the #5 main bearing cap on the rear of the engine. Here's me issue,I need to put a rear sump oil pan on my 318 to gain clearance from the crossmember (of a subframe)on my 56 Dodge. The oil pan on my 318 is a front sump with all kinds of issue's in the subrame.. this is a 1970 Dodge engine if that makes any difference.
get yourself a truck oil pan, they are rear sump. "Many stock 318 & 360's come with a center or front sump oil pan. You should seek out a rear sump pan and dipstick combination. The 318 rear sump pan is a Chrysler #5249062. The 360 takes a #5249060. These are commonly available for under $90."
You will have to use one from a 318 as the rear main section on a 360 is different to the 318. I used one from a 360 out of a van for my 318 poly and had to cut and shut a section from a 318 pan into it to make it work. The truck and van pans are not readily available here in Australia so I was lucky to get what I had. Also make sure you get the dipstick as it's special- a real long sucker.
Get the pan, oil pump pick up, dip stick & dipstick tube(disptick is about 3' long on the one I have, & the tube is longer also.). Trying to remember if one main cap bolt has a stud to support the longer oil pump pick or if that was a different engine. Hmmm..
