Hello. Based on an earlier posting from one of the 52-59 group members concerning adding an actual oil pressure gauge by utilizing a T-Pipe, I purchased all the necessary parts to add this to my 272 Y-Block. This seemed like a great idea. ( I have a faulty sending unit to begin with, that's how this all started.) I finally got around to doing it today. I even went out and purchased an oil pressure sending unit socket. The main problem is the socket is too deep to fit behind the oil sending unit still in the engine block. I tried every tool I owned including a plumbing basin wrench, but could not get it in the space enough to twist it out. (I even took off my "spin-on" oil filter.) No dice! The sending unit has a weird proprietary "nut-like" configuration on it that will not match up with normal sockets. Any thoughts on a proper tool to get the old unit out of the block? (Plus, now I'm not sure if the T-Pipe with the new sending unit on one side and the copper line on the other, will fit in the same space.) On a positive note, we mounted the oil pressure gauge under the dash (in two existing holes! Yay!), and ran the copper tubing through the firewall. Has anyone successfully done this upgrade? Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks, Mato
can you get the new unit in another oil hole? i think there are 2 available. if so just leave the old one in until you pull the motor for a rebuild or power steering install or any other upgrade you will be doing
There are two oil galley holes ahead of the filter and one behind it (I think that's the right number) Look directly above the block drain pet**** on the driver side, about 2-3 inches up.
I use and ordinary deep socket (and sometimes a regular length socket) when removing a stock YBlock sender. Either a 12 point or a 6 point socket works, I don't remember which.
there is a thread some where on the forum showing pictures of the optional locations https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/y-block-oil-pressure-sender-question.1041152/
the oil p***age you need is at the front left side between the downdraft and engine mount just below the drain ****.if memory serves me right the oil gauge has an odd looking head it should use an open end wrench.all it should take is a little turn with wrench then it will undo by hand.as to size of wrench I think it was in the 1-11/4 range.if you do not have wrenches that big you can use a pair of slip lock pliers with offset head.the other p***age I suggest is if you can not get oil gauge out.it would be nice if you get it out and put your new gauge in that hole leaving the one at front for your new mechanical one.this way it will be less cluttered and leave you with the T pipe for another day
This is the T-Pipe I want to add to the engine block where the current oil pressure sending unit is now residing. As you can see, the oil pressure unit has a proprietary nut configuration that does not mate up with a normal socket. Another post is now stating that there is an additional oil hole one could use. (?)
I have the exact same sending unit and it does match up with a socket. It's just a matter of finding the correct one. As was mentioned, it within the range of 1 to 1 1/4 inch size, either 12 point or six point. If you look where the stock sender is located, it is in an oil galley that runs to the back of the engine. In that galley are some plugs. You can remove (if not frozen in place) one of the plugs and insert the sender or the fitting for the copper tube.
if you reconfigure it like this see pic change yellow and green it should work possibly use a longer yellow bushing to fit in engine oil gallery
The problem is not enough space to get a tool in there and be able to move it. Handle on "slip-lock" pliers too long. Waiting for a short sending unit socket from my brother in Orlando. Should be here tomorrow. Hoping for the best.
whats the point of checking your oil pressure if you are just going to use a fram filter? but then i guess if you are going to use a fram filter, you better be checking your oil pressure.
