This is a great thread. It always amazes me how much these movies mean to people, myself included. It is hard to find a subject in movie-world that people are so passionate about..decade after decade.

At the moment, I'm working on a script for my book, "The Last Rock and Roll Show," which is just as much a hot rod book as it is a book about 1950's rock and roll.
I released the novel at the 50th Anniversary of The Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake, Iowa, last month. The tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper at The Surf Ballroom was one of the finest I've ever seen.

Although not a movie yet, in about six months I'll throw my hat into the ring with a "Hot Rod related movie script" as mentioned in the first post.

In my opinion, among all the great movies mentioned in this thread, AG is still the gold standard.

Hot Rod girl, hot rod gang, the lively set, all cheesy but cool for what they are i think the lively set is the corniest of the 3.

Here is another one, Corvette Summer. A product of 70's customizing, in the mid 80's one of the two cars built for the movie ( the first one) found its way to Australia.

The car was shown several times before a transporting accidient (no major damage) and was sold on to a new owner. Who used it as a promotional tool for his performance car yard.

I was asked to quote on a new candy paint job, but on inspection refused.
Telling the owner it needed more than paint.

He took my advice and it underwent a total rebuild to show quality, a long way from what it was built for in the movie.

  14. There's a 1959 "teen" movie called "Girls Town" Mel Torme and Mamie Van Doren is in it. It has some pretty good car stuff in it and a race between a rod and a brit sports car down the LA canals

Moonshine Highway is one of my all time favorites. It is a hard one to find, it was a Showtime movie from the 90's. Also there is one called the Bootleggers from the 60's or 70's. It is pretty good too.

Don't know if anyone mentioned "Invasion of the Saucer Men". Funny flick and Hot Rods to the rescue. Also, no hot rods but I watch the movie "Drive-In" at least once a year along with AG and Hollywood Knights. I saw "Thunder Road" at the movies when I was 11 or 12 and thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Robert Mitchum was the "King of Cool" as far as I was concerned.

Too many posts to remember if this was mentioned, but I'll throw in "THE WILD RIDE" which was actually Jack Nicholson's eighth movie...........

How about Moonshine Hiway? It's about moonshiners. The lead guy,Muldoon, drives a 53-54 Lincoln. Pretty good flick. Better driving scenes than Thunder Road. Especially when the sheriff blows up the 50 Merc.
