I've always heard idle for 3 minutes to allow the oil to cool in the turbo.

  2. People used to think that it primed it for the next start. Not true but it is something that people believed.

What they are doing is being "kewl". Unless they are driving one that has so much cam and fuel flow that it loads up at low RPM which is not likely.

Okay, I will try to make it short. When I was a kid, my grandpa had an m Farmall.like new. When he shut off the engine, after he turned off the ignition, he pulled out the choke rod. I asked him why he did that. He said it would suck gas into the cylinder and make it easier to start next time. I think this goes back to hand cranked tractors. When hand cranking a tractor, you had to pull the choke out, then give the crank a pull, sucking gas into a cylinder. Then push the choke half way in and give it a hard pull, starting the engine. If the engine was choked on shutdown the day before, it may ease starting the next time

I think it's dumb. I had old wore out cars in the past that would "run on or diesel" so with an automatic I'd shut them off in gear. Our 56 has never ever done it but I remember that old habit and still do it today just not with new cars.
I agree with a few said above but won't quote them.

  6. My late brother in law had a 52 Chevy powerglide. He did that every time he stopped and shut the key off. Never asked him why. He was the son of a great mechanic. The powerglide whined.

  11. No need to rev up my o/t, at idle there is dust everywhere.
Idle into a show & minutes later out come the California Dusters & the comments.
Oh well, you should have stayed home if you didn't want to get your car dusty.

    He's an idiot too.

Bet he had turn down pipes and thought it was cool in the drive heading to a carshow.
