OK to install engine w/o trans?

I am all set to drop my engine (Pontiac 400) into my truck (f-1). I haven't purchased a torque converter, so I thought I would install the engine and install the transmission later after I have bought a converter.

Is it ok to do this? What I am worried about it whether the motor mounts (they are gm factory mounts) are strong enough to prevent the engine from tipping over. On one hand I would think this is ok or else no one could ever replace a transmission w/o the engine tipping over, but I want to double check. Thanks

the mounts alone are not strong enough to hold it for long. you can do it. I've done it, because it was easier to line up the trans after than to get the engine lined up in a tight confine (s-10) but the engine was supported under the pan whilst it was without a trans.

that said, it may not be the best way. if the firewall is a tight fit, you may be creating more work. never put a poncho in a f-1

I assume you have a lift?
Some of my WORST nightmares are of changing a trans without one.

    Personally, I'd wait.

IMO, wait for whatever pieces you need to complete the install.

If you do want to do it, use something to support the rear of the engine. Apiece of chain under the rear of the pan dbolted to the frame on both sides, a piece of channel or box tubing would work too. Anything to keep the twisting pressure off the motor mounts.

Then when you get the torque converter you can just proceed from where you left off.

I agree with what a couple of the others said about supporting the rear of the engine under the pan. I used a piece of wood and a jackstand. Worked great. If you rig it up right you won't even have to change the set up to work on the tranny and converter when the time comes.

  7. I'm not a big fan of laying under the car to install a tranny...bellhousing bolts, flexplate bolts, etc. can be a pain in the ass when there's little to no clearance. Shouldn't be too hard to come up with a converter and do it all at once.

has this engine been in the truck yet? if not, go ahead and stab it in there with the converterless tranny, cause i can guarantee that it will have to come out a time or six in the meantime to take care of things you overlooked, making the mounts, steering, exhaust etc. it's never a stick it and forget it deal, at least if it's gonna look decent.

disregard if you just pulled the engine for freshening.
