I talked with my agent today, All State will not insure assembled or special construction vehicles. Any leads on a company that will?
Great, that's what I was looking for. I'll call and talk to them, it may help decide exactly how I proceed.
I called them today, they don't insure "assembled" or kit cars, but they did give me a number of a place here in Tulsa that does. anyone needs the number, PM me. I called and talked with the tag agent closest to me to find out about getting a title, they said the notarized bill of sale will be good for the parts I use from the Fiat, and to make sure I have receipts for everything else. Looks like I'm cleared to start tearing the Fiat apart. I'm gonna sell parts from it to help cover as much of the cost of the build as possible. Glass, body, convertible to frame, maybe a few other items. Should be enough to cover the materials for the frame and a little more.
Well ... your NOT alone! I just got a phone call from my insurance agent yesterday, and she informed me that the current underwriter - ING - of the policies on my 1941 Ford Stake Bed Delivery and my 1928 Ford Tudor Hiboy; will NO LONGER INSURE THEM!! Why? Because they are MODIFIED!! She said that she hasn't been able to get a straight answer out of ING; just exactly what constitutes a "modified" vehicle. (maybe "fuzzy dice" hanging from the rear view mirror??) ING has been insuring ALL my vehicles - daily drivers included - for the past 8 years; and now they are "pulling the pin!!" Me; NEVER have made a claim. Well over 25 years old. I'd tell you what I REALLY think of them; but my keyboard would melt!!
That sucks. All State has my homeowners, auto, and cycle insurance, but won't touch this one. I'd be pissed if I were in your shoes where they'd taken my money for a few years first.
I just insured my 1930 Model A Coupe. Didn't tell them anything about modifications. Get back with the tag agency and ask them for a copy of page 2.74. Titling Assembled Vehicles. Its good info. Probably same info they told you. Keep receipts and take pictures.
Hard to pull that when I'm ditching the original body and building a single seater out of the left-overs. I'm going by at lunch Friday to pick up the paperwork. They did tell me to keep all receipts. Pictures are a given with almost anything I build.
I have been with State Farm since '75 and haven't been turned down on anything I tried to insure with them. The longer I am with them the better my rates get. My old 300ZX runs under $300 every six months for full coverage. I used to rebuild totals for my agent's dad before the Oklahoma Rebuilt Title (Brown Title) came along. They usually want to take pictues of your car for their records but other than that it is usually a breeze.
I gave them pictures I took, and also had to give them an appraisal. I don't know if the appraisal has to be notorized, but mine was.
I just got done titleing and insuring my special assembled vehicle in Bartlesville, Ok. I went with State Farm and pay $190.00 twice a year for a car that was insured for $8,500.00. I had ABSOULUTELY no problems titling or insuring the car. PM if you want any advise. I only did this about a month ago.
As far as I know, Hagerty does NOT insure cars in CANADA. If someone knows otherwise; PLEASE, let me know! (I know they do in the UK)
I had a one ton truck that I couldn't get insurance on because it had a flat bed with progressive ins. Oklahoma Farmers Union insured it and some other odd vehicles I had and they were reasonable on the rates.
