I ran one of those on a SBC - built the engine for my Uncle's truck way back around 1980 or so. It ran really well and made the truck a lot more fun to drive. Of course, we then took the SBC out of it and put a 427 BBC in it - that was even better If it was mine, I'd have the turbo checked out and probably rebuilt -- gosh knows what 'life' it has had! Here is a link to at least checkout: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/products/products.html Also, do a bit of research into how they oil modern turbo setups -- would probably be a good idea to really think through this end of it and make sure the oiling system is correctly setup. The one you show looks to have some sort of 'waste gate' on it? The one that we ran did not -- just a pressure cylinder and a 'air throttle plate' inside the casting. Is that an 'add-on' or does it belong to the kit? I'd like to see a bit more to understand what it is and all that jazz.
OMG !!! I remember the add for those fondly. There were a couple of guys around Trenton that used them. In particular a guy in my neighborhood put one on a Z/28 (Think '78-'79) , there was another on '77 Cutl*** a friend of mine painted and the most memorable was the one some guy put on a V-8 Vega, then he put a Cheater plate system between the turbo and intake. For a while it was pretty quick and ruled the street. But much to everyones surprise(sarc!) it grenaded itself oiled the tires wrecked and was never put back together. I would love to follow this build, what is going to power ???
its going to power my sbc in my 58 chevy truck the one on my avatar.. see the waste gate ?? Somebody know if it was a add on because in the drawing i have its not on there..what year did the start selling this??
G'day, I ran an Accel system almost identical to yours on back in the early 80's. It was a couple of years old when I got it. It was originally set up for a 302 Mustang but the fellow I got it from was using it on a 327 sbc. He had a shop make a double rams horn for the one side and ran a regular rams horn on the other side. I used his double manifold but since I was running it in a Vega, I used a v8 Monza drivers side manifold to clearn the ch***is. The system worked very well. The oil drain system I used worked quite well. I used an electric fuel pump and simply drained the turbo into a bung attached to a block-off plate for the fuel pump boss. Never ran into any drain problems with it. ms
You want to make sure the bearing between the compressor and turbine is good. Many times they get coked up with burned oil and will fail.
i always wanted one of those, i had a friend who took the byp*** carb plate and used it with a B&M blower instead of the turbo, he had a v-belt setup he could ingage from inside the cab of his pickup, if you were out somewhere and he drove past and engaged the blower, it was cool..
Some pics of mine. 351W. I took the original boost control off, and put a 8PSI wastegate on it. A couple of pistons came apart, so I put water/methanol injection on the next shortblock to keep the piston temps down a bit...
8PSI. Wastegate goes between the heads and the turbo. ( on the pressure side of the turbo, exhaust side. )
I had that set-up on a 1970 Dodge Charger with a 383 in 1977, it worked great. Mine was set at 7 lbs. of boost, sometimes the boost control would stick and the boost would go to 10lbs. and it really ran hard then.
Hey I just talked to an old friend that had some experiance with one on a SBC, he says be careful, they make alot of heat and may want to consider Water/Methanol injection. He did say the best power compromise L-79 cam with a std bore/stroke 350 with lightly worked "882" heads 2.02/1.60 ProFlo valves and about 8.25:1 compression forged pistons.
When I get out off it at about 5PSI, its fine. If I keep my foot in it and let it go to 8PSI it rattles. The W/M injection fixes that. But I opened up the W/M jets to the point it misfires at WOT/high RPM. So I'll have tone it down a bit from the point its at right now. Pistons will probably be the weak point untill I replace them with Forged. I'd like to get better heads & cam for it at some point as well...
