one of the things I was wanting out of the '55 I ranted about last week was the speaker and other unit that contained tubes other than the ones that are in the radio...I need these for the original pontiac radio to work...

I know no one wants to listen to AM much anymore, and an AM radio is not people's first choice for tunes, unless they are restorers...I'm not in it for resto points, I just happen to like the old AM radio...it looks a lot better than a cut up dash with some kinda digital POS that takes a rocket scientist to program it, complete with scrolling screens with pics of dolphins and such...simplicity...thats what I am after, anyone tried to find a simple analog radio with two knobs lately?

if anyone knows where I can find the setup for a '56 pontiac...lemme know, I have the radio itself, I just need the rest of the stuff that went with it...or perhaps another radio with the same dimensions (the W-I-D-E knob pattern) that will fit in its place and still sound like an AM radio should?

well i met this guy at the fall hoosier swap meet who will do a full cosmetic and mechanical resto on YOUR radio, and if you desire he'll add options like FM and RCA outs....
you can keep your stock appearing radio and still have FM and a cd changer and the like..
i've only seen his display models, but he seems squared away.....

A guy on here used the face of the radio to make a hinge that actually concealled a new radio under it. if you get a newer radio with a remote and have a tiny windo for the IR to work you'll never have to touch it.
otherwise the guy that do those fm conversions charge about 500-600 dollars

Here's another guy who uses the same housing and tuner but installs new guts for am and fm. Expensive though but not compared to the aftermarket crap.
The frequency is changed by turning the power switch off and on. I haven't invested in this yet... I guess I'm just too busy listening to the flatty! The cost is alittle pricey but it's all in what you want. Here's the Gentleman's email and phone.
Here's also part of an email I received
Are you 6 volt positive ground? If you are 12 volt negative ground you will have more options less cost. Price would start at $550.00 questions call M-F 8:00 to 5:00 PST.
    Thanks

That "other" unit is the audio amplifier and power supply.
I may have one out in the trailer but wont be able to look for a week or two. Ive got a few hundred old car radios salted away out there. I restore 1 or 2 a month and dump on EBay, amazing the prices they bring.

Drop me an EMail to remind me if you dont find one.
BTW, which radio do you have? There were 2-3 models including the signal seeker. The base unit was a single ended audio. The others used push pull output.
There should be a model # inside one of the covers.

thanks man, I will be goin back to arkansas for thxgiving and am hoping to drive the pontiac back here then....and leave this green boogerish lookin mercury tracer there...I will get the radio and bring it home with me regardless and e-mail ya then & tell ya which one I have...

thx all of y'all that answered...

Im just lookin for either the audio amplifier unit, or perhaps another AM radio that will fit the opening of the original....there are a couple of them on eBay now that look like they might fit, one is from a 61 pontiac I think...it looks like it might fit, still waiting for the fellow to answer my "question to seller" about the dimensions of the knobs...

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be the same radio as a 56 Chevy...if you want I can get dimensions for you... If so, that will open up a big door for ya.
