Thanx for the pics Skippy, brings back memories of Sunday trips down to Riverside.
In your second lot- the front shot of Daryl Fingers channeled coupe that's Eddie Ford of Custom Rodder fame standing beside it with Pentax camera round his neck.

This one is Joe Gatt from Sydney. One fast car and with his brothers he went on to build and race some of the countries if not the world's fastest and quickest Ford powered drag race cars. I think Ben still owns this car.

That's right Carps and I can still wear the suit I got married in too!!
Missus reckons I need worming and a good dose of Thibenzole would fix me LOL.
Funny thing if you look at all the folks in thebackground in those shots they are all "skinny kids" and there are some great hairstyles and clothes.

  4. Great pics Skippy and Phil.

Darrol Fingers '34 5w was at TCR and painted yellow some pics were posted on Ozrodders, does anyone know who the current owner is?

  5. That's the best part about looking at old photos, remembering who was who and how cool we all were, or wondering where 'so and so' is today.

Although when most of these pics were taken I was only a kid and you 'grown ups' were too cool talk to me. ;)

  6. You're still a cool kid, just stuck in a festering old & tired body....;):D

Get some of those 8 track video's of yours and start converting them to DVD & upload to youtube....like old speed parts, they deserve to be used like designed, and not stuck on a dusty shelf....

Top stuff there Chad, keep that scanner cooking.

    Cheers,

    Thanks for the sweet pics!

  10. the Finger coupe was at my dads workshop prior to the car being taken over to TCR its belongs to a friend of my dads his name slips me right now as im posting but he has had the car for the better part of 30 years, my dad was going to install the new floor in the car but had too many projects ahead of the coupe so the car went to TCR pretty sure it is being restored and not revamped, i know it will be running the original studebaker motor.

    Here are some more.
Some starting line action with dad driving
Chuck May's '32 and the other shot of John English's '32 roadster.
If you "older" guys can work out who is running against them,
feel free to fill in the blanks. You all have been a great help.

Skippy, I think you will find that Ian Splatts bucket was made from a 32 Ford tourer (check out the cowl vent) with a sectioned 34 Chev grille shell.
The Model A pickup was owned by Warren Evans in the 60's, was made from a sport coupe. He was married to John English's daughter, isn't now. Forgot what happened to the car but Eddie would know.

I'm a Stromberg WW nut (hence my avatar), and there's way more of 'em in use and more info to be gleaned from folks in Australia than anywhere else in the world!

Thanks Boris , its a lovely car . Lots of old oz rods have similar nerf/bumpers was it a rego or just a period thing ?

  20. pretty much just a period thing. Cars in US magazines that made it here had them, so when our guys built hot rods, they were included. The fenders are a legal/rego thing. :(

Thanks for the correction Swifty, definately a deuce cowl.
Seems that a lot of early buckets were built fron deuce front sections. Were the backs that bad or it just didn't matter back then to throw the back half of a tub away? I guess it was cool to build a bucket and a tub was just an old car. Wonder where all that metal is these days.:(

Skippy, a lot of tourers (or Phaetons as the Yanks call them) got the "ute" treatment long before the hot rodders got onto them. But you are right in that they were not a desirable body style in the early 60's along with the mordor sedan.
We didn't realise they were in short supply in the US until Eddie got a letter from Scritch asking if he could find him a Deuce "Phaeton". Both Eddie and I then bought Phaetons which we still have-well I've got most of mine as some bits are in a certain 32 roadster LOL

Yeah, a roadster is for a guy and his girl, but once the family thing starts...................... Better keep that tourer section handy.:D

Skippy, had a long chat with your dad tonight, first time we've spoken to one another in about 40 years! Thanks for putting me in touch.

And yeah, my old sedan is still out there somewhere, but he can't remember who bought my 28 Es*** 3 window coupe project in 67! It was channeled over a 34 Ford roadster ch***is, and the body was really good and ****** rare in Oz, so it's still got to be out there in someone's parts stash.

    Cheers, Glen.

Thanks for the terrific photos, really great to see what was keen in Australia at that time.
We lived in Templestowe (sp?), near Melbourne '90 - '93, loved the area and country, but didn't happen to connect with any hot rod activities, too busy at work.
