Projects Old Beetle, HAMB Friendly?

So i just got my new daily driver. Took me a while to choose the type of car i wanted. My banger powered model A really has got me stuck on simplicity and reliability. My decision came to a Beetle. I loved the way the pre-65 small window beetles look. they are easy to work on, still good parts availability, insanely simple and a look designed from the 40's.

In my area they are hard to find especially old ones. You guys from Cali are probly so sick of them lol. that's where 90% of the really nice ones i found forsale were from.

So i found mine, in ohio, had to import it into canada and now im just working on getting it totally road worthy. It's a 1958 with a 70 single port 1600 swapped in. It's lowered ALOT but properly. the paint is a slide show of the cars life over the past 52 years.

should i keep going, or are they frowned upon on here?

anybody else DD a beetle?

 

I grew up on Bugs in So Cal but I don't believe this is the correct forum.

 

not exactly "frowned upon" per se but, it's not really what this site is all about. is it an old car and does it get cool points? yes. but, it's not traditional hot rod or custom material, which is what this site is dedicated to.

 

I hate "is this traditional" threads. That said, I dont think they are HAMB friendly being an import. But I really like the early bugs sounds like a cool car, got any pics?

I have a Manx Style Buggy as one of the projects lots of Big stuff over there.

 

I remember as a young kid my Dad had a 289 fastback mustang he thought was King shit. We were cruising through Santa Ana one morning and he had a stop confritation with a Bug that left him in the dust. To this day he swears he missed a gear but after that I knew I had to have one one day.

 

thats why i figured id ask. SOME other cars get a free pass around here so i wasn't sure. here's a pic with no front bumper. the stock bumper will be going back on.

Actually the design was from the mid-30s under special orders from Herr Hitler to Herr Porsche. Few produced as the People's Car (Volkswagen) at that time but many produced as the Kubelwagen (German Jeep) during the war years.

 

Some people consider them the first SUV beofre the Jeep made itself known.

 

Old Beetle, yes.
HAMB friendly, no. Sometimes the HAMB isn't friendly.

 

ya i know, i just mainly meant it was a continued design from higher production post war cars.

 

I think most people on the HAMB have a soft spot for Bugs. They were always part of the scene for me but forums are places for exchanges of ideas and tapping into past knowledge. I really think that you would short change yourself by posting your endeavors here than on the Samba.

hey I really like old Datsuns. I've had a 65 truck, 70 240Z, 73 truck and a 72 510 wagon. maybe we can start a weekly thread like the "sunday models" thread only call it "foriegn cars that have nothing to do with the HAMB Sunday"

 

Put one of those 40 Ford looking front ends on it then maybe it will become more HAMB friendly.

 

Car guys is car guys. Most don't like their beans mixed with their corn. That's why the tray has dividers.

isnt that a big window bug? i have a 66and your side windows look the same size as mine, nice car, its got that"hoodride" look as known in the bug world. i built my bug and just got my model a, a couple of years ago.

 

nope, 58 still had the small side windows but got a slightly bigger windshield and the oval back window was replaced with a more square one. 65 and newer got an even bigger windshield and the side windows got bigger also. then in 72 the back window got huge and in 73 (i believe) superbeetles got an even bigger curved windshield.

 

Man - I just remembered that I have a BARRIS designed VW with a Rolls Royce front end model kit somewhere. Now everything Barris is HAMB friendly or are some things best forgotten?

 

When you look back at the history of VWs in hot rodding, off-roading and road racing in the USA I think they're a fit. (I would say that having rodded one 40 years ago!)

In 1970, HRM asked the rhetorical question of whether or not dune buggies were the roadsters of the '70s? With the street rod revival of the following decade, probably not, but that's how much influence the ol' Beetle had back then.

VWs were also popular in the low rider scene, too, along with lots of customs.

 

THeres lots of import threads around, populars are turned into drag cars quite often and when you look at it like that, drag racing isnt traditional hot rodding, but theres still loads of gasser threads.

Theres nothing wrong with an old beetle.

I've been looking at beetles lately and found that some people are putting Subaru WRX turbo motors in them. Something like 300 hp! Nothing with that swap is HAMB friendly but I think it would make a hell of a sleeper!

i think that in some cases a beetle can be hamb friendly!mine is a 66 standard(none of the following fuel guage,glovebox lid,interior lite partial hood lining)I race it in the nostalgia races occasionally It is raced in the vintage gas class against some very non traditional cars as the "MASTER RACER"it has an all vw engine hand ported heads old ida webers engle cam centerlines and cal parts mags.Other than the engine capacity it's a 2332 its very simular to the early vw gassers to the point of being a daily driver not lowered preped at the track and its good for 13.0 at 108.I could start a fight by saying all 33 willys gassers are prerenders if they don't have a concrete spare tire and not all gassers had a straight axle but i 'm just a car guy who has a volksy nearly 99% of vw belong at the samba or cal look.com but i definatly don't fit in there,but i think in the context of history some should be considered a "drag racing hot rod"for want of a better term.
