Texas, Tennessee and Florida have no state income taxes or personal property tax. Which is great for retirees. We have a beach house in the Florida Pan Handle and love it there. Rodding all year round. Will be selling our Kentucky home and will live in Florida all year round.

  2. I've posted on this subject quite a few times also, I totally love the area I'm in...but the people....there's too many. It seems like I'm seeing more and more of out of state plates everyday, it's not the sleepy suburb that I moved to in '94. That said I have 8 more years to go then I'm out also, to a colder climate (higher elevation), less people, more room. I'm not to concerned with a car scene as I'm kind of a loner now :D, just don't want to be hassled with my cars, have a shop and be in a good, clean, decent area. I'm thinking Arizona mountains, close enough to here to drive back to visit the coast.....g/f doesn't want major snow.

I guess the dream would be a small town full of nice people and live in an old warehouse/bowling alley/movie theater and cooler weather (like 60/70's during summer)

Keep posting on your journeys, so us homebodies get a better idea of the world :).

The Four Corners area has a great car culture and reasonable housing costs (except in Durango). Good weather, but the job situation could be better. The whole region probably has 150,000 people spread over a large area. Lots of people are coming in here and either buying small businesses or starting from scratch. Moved to San Diego with my parents in 1948. We still spend winters there, but the traffic, prices, taxes and vibe leave a lot to be desired.

    What city?

I love the area too since your south OC I'm guessing we are a stones throw away but a 5 hr drive! I feel I live in the best part of so-cal but it jus don't seem to make sense with the dollars I have anymore I feel like the common man is being pushed out of CA and that's just the way it is in the 80s and 90s I feel the wages still kept up with cost of living, you can see the common working shlub on the freeway as their car is 20yrs old bald tires and sun burned paint... you see more and more on the freeway

Yeah In the last 5 years I have seen a noticeable increase in traffic in my area... feels double on 78 between Escondido and Oceanside when your commute turns from 20 minutes to 45 in a couple years that's pretty major!

Thirtytwo; Good luck with your move(!), just know that leaving Socal is (financially) usually a one way street. It's like reading about a Hot Rod that sells and gets shipped overseas, "it aint never coming back". But that's okay, you're single and have wide open road ahead of you!

You're not alone. I've worked for the same Co. here for 25 years and have watched the old timers retire out. In the last 5-10 years, nearly all of them have "cashed in their chips", aka sold their home, moved out of state and in many cases bought a home free and clear. How can you argue with that? I've seen coworkers relocate in droves to AZ, OR, NV, TX, OK, ARK, WI, Philippines. The few that stay are either free and clear or have a very reasonable mortgage because they bought many years ago or have $$$ in their family. The buyers are high tech graduates/professionals or well to do retirees. I've been here since 1970 and have seen San Diego really change and and the quality of living deteriorate. The excessive taxes and fees, declining infrastructure, dog eat dog mentality and the "entitled/free shit" generation. San Diego is a beautiful place but the admission fee is very high. CA has 12% of the population but over 34% of the nations welfare recipients. I read that over 50% of CA residents receive a monthly check of some sort from the government. The middle class is getting taxed/squeezed unbelievably. CA is starting to look like the economy of Mexico-a tiny percent holding most of the wealth and most of the rest impoverished.
I'm looking to retire in 5 years. I'd love to pull stakes, but the Wife wants to stay. All of our family is here. Of 4 kids (all in town), I have one left in High School. We'll see what it looks like 5 years from now. Grandkids may come along. Meanwhile, I'm paying down the mortgage and preparing the 1 acre+ property by going with drought resistant/low maintenance landscaping wherever possible and doing all the 'heavy' work, such as dropping huge nuisance trees and reroofing the house before I'm too old to do it!
I have a coworker ready to retire and the entire family (grown kids included) are cashing in and heading to MO. Maybe that's the answer.

If things work out as planned, next year at this time, I'll have escaped from New York and be back in America in my new house in Alvaton, KY, about 7 miles east of Bowling Green, KY.

We travel around quite a bit to the races. My wife and I both like the Bowling Green area. I am in Iowa now and like it but its 20 degrees this morning and everything is covered with ice. Not good.Best of luck in your move.
