Looks like there's more length in the decklid area on the stocker too. Cool score!!!

Quickly nixed the running boards. No time for anything else.
Can´t make out what was done on the Jimmy Summers Merc, but his doors reach to the bottom of the body.

GFY.:D:D:D I've only had my '35 for 2 years this week and consideringthat nothing has been untouched except paint I don't think that's too bad. When you actually break out a paint gun and an engine that doesn't come stock in one of your cars (or one that does over 45mph), come talk to me. :D:D:D

And what the hell are you Zinging about? 6 months of my build were taken up with and engine being built because I cared enough not to run a stock gay cam amongst other things. You've managed to actually polish a TURD and then you painted it pink you prick. Xoxoxo :D:D:D

Oh and I forgot that I managed to have a kid and a month's worth of hospital stays in that 2 years sooo.....I'd say I'm right on schedule.

Back to the MERKIN, I think as much as I love running boards getting rid of them gives a really clean and european class to them so I would consider leaving them with out. WWJD....What Would Jimmy (Summers) Do?

It's great to see that that Merc finally got in some hands that will treat it right. Thanks for the great story on the road trip to get it and go to the Hamb drags at the same time.

That is too rad. Do it. Do it. And tickled pink was an early contender for King Of Trucks thanks to Kenny. I can't wait to see what happens with this one.

I can change cams any old time. But I'd probably get kicked out of the club if I didn't run a gay cam.

I packed that firewall in the bed of my truck Jear-Bear. Hopefully you can use it, if not I am happy enough to stop tripping over it.

Very kool! Never seen one done like this before!

  17. I like it without the roof, maybe a carson top? Some guys like to cut through the front curve of the roof to reduce chance of warping when sectioning. If you're gonna finish the 49 first, mock it up and paint it satin or primer so you can drool while you share the love. I'm drooling.

Jeff, you're doing fine for a first timer but that is some funny stuff

Terd, what does a gay cam look like?

Now back to our regularly scheduled program, I'm digging the three window, a lot, I would have never thought of that!

Kind of reminds me of a '41 plymouth Business coupe but obviously sleeker...

Damn awesome info! I hadn't every heard of cutting through the roof to reduce the chance of warpage.
I will get this thing in a uniform color, I think it will change the look of the car drastically

  24. click on pic then next then previous repeat

    subtle changes sleeker ?????

Well after pulling the car off the trailer tonight, I finally had the chance to study the car and what was done to it.
The roof had been a huge mystery, and there have been a handful of great theories. The only real mystery left to decipher is
WHAT IS THIS ROOF OFF OF!!!!!!
here's the deal. The cut just behind the front windshield is where the roof was originally cut. they then cut the entire roof skin off the car and placed a new roof skin on the car about 2" in front of the deck lid! [IMG]
^^^^^ this was hidden by a piece of wood (serving as a package trey) that must have blown out on the way back.

There is a piece of sheet-metal that is about 10-12" long that has been shaped really well and connects the new roof to the old.
Where the rain gutter would be on most cars is where the roof was welded back on and was really finished pretty well.... Heck I didn't see that it had been welded until I peeked my head inside the car, an looked behind the garnish moldings.
^^^ what is the roof off of?!!

The dead giveaway for this not being a modified stock roof is the back window opening. There are no welds and it rolls in on the back side... I looked the rear window opening over really well and cannot find a single weld.

Another interesting discovery is in the rear fenders. They are not only raised, but sunk into the body. They are nowhere near as wide as factory fenders. [IMG]

Someone put some SERIOUS time and effort into this car....I just wish I knew who!!![IMG]

Greetings! The photoshopped three-window looks great, to improve the flow I would replace the rear window section with a chunk of 35-36 Ford coupe top, the reverse-flare below the window would flow into the tulip panel better, Good Luck with your project, Mike.

Do you have some better photos showing this... judging the photos you showed it does not look like the rear fenders are sunk into the body to me. The rear fenders on the 1940 Merc always look way smaller than a 1940 Ford which most people are used to. The body on the Merc was just wider than the Ford body.

Great find btw.. and I wish I could help identifying... but I don't think I have ever seen it again.
Some really careful planning has to be done on this one. Possibly getting it sit on the right stance and with some nice wheels and tires will give you the best idea. Perhaps it does not need to be chopped at all. At least the original builder did not think it needed it.
