History Old DETROIT AUTORAMA picture thread, what do you have ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harms Way, Nov 18, 2010.

  1. I was in the 1958 show and this is the only picture that I have and it was the photo taken by the show photographer who I assume was Robert Hegge.

I have some slides from 1960, everything from the silver sapphire, kookie car (the white version with flames) and The Victorian. Will post them as soon as I take them to the store to get them on a digital file.

Awesome !,.. looking forward to seeing them ,..:)

  4. Can't help but wonder what the guys at Autorama have in their archives. I know when I was in the Autorama, they had a photographer there taking pictures.
I, too, look forward to seeing those slides from 1960.

If you showed at Detroit one year and wanted to show the
following year you were required to made a change to
show again. My mild custom of 1960 was a full custom
the last time it was there in 1970.

Chuck, Thanks for the awesome pictures from 1967.
Several years ago my brother and I talked to one of the old timers who has been involved in the Autorama (& still was) for years don't remember his name). He said they didn't keep any records of the early years of who displayed their cars. Bob Larivee is the one who painted the signs that went in front of the cars.

What do you remember about the guy ?,.. I would guess I probably know him. And your 100% right, Bob Larivee painting the show cards at the first Autorama. As I am told he was still a young man back in 53', In fact he competed in the 1946 Soap Box Derby.

Bob worked for the family sign painting business, and attended art school.

The guy I would say was in his 80's, Bob Larivee introduced him to us. I just don't remember his name. He really didn't want to talk about the old days, sort of grumpy. We were asking about the Moraniec Roadster (before we knew it was owed by Dick Moraniec), we know it was raced in Lawrenceville Illinois at the world finals in 1955, he did say that he went with a group of guys from detroit area to those races.

  12. I took this picture, maybe five or six years ago at the Detroit Autorama. Not old enough for this thread I know but since the car was such a knock out, I thought you wouldn't mind.

Where in the hell was "Half Day Speedway?"

"Half Day Speedway" was in Half Day, Illinois. North of Chicago and West of Highland Park, near Vernon Hills.

It was an abandoned Army Air Force runway and was operated by the Granatelli Bros. of GranCor fame. One of the first strips in the Midwest.

  20. The picture of "Block's Clocks" brings back some memories. Larry drove that car everywhere and I spent a few evenings under it before that Autorama helping him clean it up.

I wish that was my site and my pictures but they aren't. I found it through Google. As Harm's Way said earlier, the early lighting in Cobo was bad and like other's, the few pictures I have are too dark to post.

My old roadster in Cobo Hall 1956. At least that is what I was told. Bottom right picture. It belonged to Jerry Davies at the time and I sold it back to him a few years ago.

Thanks for posting the link to the Joe Stevens photos, those are great, haven't come across that link before. Someone has to have some pictures of that quality from even earlier shows.
