Not to talk you out of your 496 plan, but I had a hell of a time to get my 455 & posi to hook up. When it did, it ran out of RPM quickly as it fell on it's face above 5500. Might want to look at a 427 BBC.

Definitely not opposed to a 427, but the 454 blocks are all over the place and can be had for a song in most cases. Idk, we will see. The chassis setup is the first priority when i get back at it. I know im gonna throw a rat under the hood, but no gaurantee as to what exactly the build will include

    427 is just a destroked 454.

  9. Way before my time! It is a sweet truck and Pliscos still have a body shop in East Pittsburgh. Not sure what happened to the truck though.

Green Grenade, glad to see the plan changed from leafs to a 4 link, was gonna suggest it. You'll have more adjustability to get it to hook without adding weight in the back. Go for the 496, head selection will set your high rpm. What do you have in mind for heads? Saxxon, I've always loved Scouts, seeing one set up for the strip is even better.

Squirrell, sorry i meant to say 454 long blocks are readily available, so if i could pick up a solid long or short block and use the existing crank it may be a cheaper option to go to. But then again im not sure if id like to go to a 496 or not (or 427 for that matter) but the extra 69ci over a 427 sure would make it a bit easier to throw down a bigger number. Im still not opposed to a 454 build. The fella painting my bel air has a solid 454 complete intake to pan and said he may let it go for 500 bucks. Theres guys online claiming to touch the 600hp mark with a set of 781s gone through by someone who really knows there shit on those heads. It would be easier to hit with a stroker, but if i can get a steal of a deal on something who knows...... And as far as heads go im still undecided. Depends on what size build im gonna run. I could go mild budget build and do some minor port work on some cast heads and aim for mid 500hp or if i wanted to throw some money at a good set of say afr 265s on a 496 with the right setup may scrape the high 600 or touch the 700hp mark. I guess it all depends on how fast you wanna go and how much money you wanna spend. I need to sit down and figure out the weight of the truck, what gears im gonna run and consider what ill really need to get into the 10s as far as the power plant goes

And indy i think you misunderstood. Gonna be doing a ladder bar/ leaf spring setup. I would like to go four link but i already have the leaf setup

I never made it into the tens with my 55 belair...got close...it has a blower, but the engine and gearing are very mild, since it's a street car.

Big block pickups are kind of heavy, you know.

Yea its definitely not the lightest option to run. I believe curb weight is around 3450 with a small block. I figure if i ditched the heavy ass bench seat for some old school buckets, no inner fenderwells, no bed floor, no heat ac or anything really in the dash or interior. LexAn windows. Pretty much just a stripped down toy for the track. Ladder bar setup with a track purporse rear gear and slicks when its on the track. If i can scrape the 600 horse mark with a torquey 496 and get it to hook well i think it would have a solid shot to get there. May take some time but its a challenge id love to take !

If you really want to go fast in your pickup, you should talk to this guy.

Any motor that big & your looking at a frame twister. I would also rethink the rear end setup. That 4 link may be a better idea.

Here is a very good chassis book

Yea i was looking at the frAme i have now (stock with a 81 camaro clip) and decided on fabbing a new frame out of 2x4 box tubing. It would seem to be easier and stronger to build one from scratch than to box, square up, and fix the notch and other problem areas on my frame now. Might go with a 2x5 main rail under the cab and before the rear kickup for extra strength. Id like to go with a somewhat similar design as the art morrison frames

The main design feature id like to use is the center " x member ". Looks like a damn strong design. And then tie the ladder bar mounts into the crossmember at the rear driveshaft hoop

Read around about some 427 builds. One that intrigued me was a guy who ran a 10:1 427 on 93 pump with edelbrock 454 rpm heads, valve job and mild porting, lunati solid roller, 3:70 gears, turbo 400 on drag radials and ran an 11.35 in a 3650 lb car. I guess i always turned away the 427 idea due to the easy power of a budget stroker. It would definitely up the cool factor and keep a vintage feel to run a 427.

Whats your guys pros and cons, anyone ran both ?

  25. Here is my brothers car back in 1958 when owned by Larry Carline. There is also a video of it drag racing back then as seen on the "Hot Rods of Dearborn" website.

This truck ran out of San Diego and Dick Boyington was a local radio DJ. Factory backed, it was often seen in the Dragmaster shop in Carlsbad.
